Uganda 2003 came to fruition in October 2001 at the UK-Uganda Network meeting at Kibbleston Scout camp in Staffordshire. Certain people that had been on the Uganda 2000 expedition expressed their wish to continue their interest in their project towns in Uganda. Nick Winter from Avon announced his intention to do another Explorer Belt in Kamuli district. Others declared their wish to return to their project towns at Lukataime in Kamuli district, Soroti, Masindi, and Tororo. Visits to the town of Mbale in 2000 prompted the idea that we should try to raise a contingent to that town as well. It was mooted that, should Uganda 2003 become a reality, we would also offer the contingents a chance to climb Mt Elgon and/or a visit to a Safari Park.
Uganda 2003 will be an expedition to Uganda in August 2003. It will consist of 5 projects, Soroti, Mbale, Masindi, Tororo, Lukataime and the Venture Scout Explorer Belt (to be held in Kamuli district).
The aim of Uganda 2003 is build links between scouts from the United Kingdom and the host country Uganda. Develop life skills in the young people taking part in the expedition. Spread awareness of international scouting, in particular as regards to Uganda. Each of the Uganda 2003 contingents will consist of approximately 15 Explorer Scouts, Scout Network and leaders selected from across the UK.
A core team made up of contingent members and a committee from the UK Uganda Network will co-ordinate group efforts in transport, adventurous activities, medical and general support. All Uganda 2003 projects or visits will be registered with, and approved by the Uganda National Scout Headquarters.
