A Turtle in Time (Episode 190) Review

BRIEF STORYLINE Continued from the previous episode, Shredder snips his way through the wires attached to his head and escapes the clutches of Dregg. Dregg realises this when he starts draining the energy and power from the turtles and Krang.

Dregg now has all of their mental and physical strengths. He can remember their past experience's and contains their ninja skills. Dregg and assistant Mung leave, while Shredder comes out of hiding, from under one of the surgical tables, and shuts off the forcefield around Krang, and they both escape successfully.

Meanwhile April contacts Carter on the Turtle Comm. Dregg is on a power ego trip. He accumulates a plan to conquer the universe with his new-found powers, but Shredder has stolen the chip needed for his plans to take shape.

Carter makes an attempt to rescue April and the turtles, but Dregg turns up and things go his way, and Carter runs off. Carter goes back to the turtles lair for help.

April fools a bat-man soldier into thinking she is having trouble breathing in her cell. She hits him senseless, and switches off the forcefield imprisoning the turtles. They are in a very weak state with no energy.

At the lair, Carter and Splinter disscuss about the situation at hand, and Carter signals to Landor and Merrick to return from the future. He wants them to bring the TMNT from the past, who are in their normal, fit conditions. However, he cannot let the TMNT from history stay in the present for more than 24 hours, as the TMNT will never exist, ever!

Can Carter, Merrick and Landor convince the turtles of the past to believe them? What will become of Shredder and Krang now that they have escaped from Dregg's clutches? Can Dregg be beaten with the TMNT's skills availiable to him?

TMNT REVIEW HQ COMMENTS: It's an unspectacular episode, continuing the adventure of the turtles against Dregg who is trying to collect their minds and skills. It gets off to an original start with Shredder escaping from Dregg's mind-stealing device. This is one of the better scenes. Also, Krang appearing on Dregg's giant forehead after stealing Krang's mind is cool. When was the other time you saw Shredder becoming a prisoner of a main villain and then escaping?

The first major action scene in the transporter room is overlong, but it is dramatic and a good twist when a hole is made in one of the walls, and a very heavy hurricane-style wind sweeps through, and Shredder and Krang finally escape.

We see one of the more memorable scenes of Dregg and Mung together, where New York becomes a city of fire from a piece of the sun, shown on his virtual simulator technology. Later on, Shredders brings Krang back to full health, to the delight of you Dregg-haters out there.

April does something rare, she saves the turtle's lives! A refreshing change amongst the jerky editing in these scenes. Then we come to the 100% condition turtles of the past, in a lacklustre action scene with Shredder and Krang in the Technodrome. There's then a funny part in which Raphael compares Merrick and Landor(from the distant future) to something out of the Twilight Zone.

The final battle scene of an astounding 8 Ninja Turtles (4 from the past, 4 from present) attacking Dregg and the Bat-men is dissappointing in terms of visula delight, could've been more hard-hitting, more simultaneous action from both sets of turtles. However, it leads to quite a good cliffhanger of the TMNT getting their first peek at Dregg's huge robotic monsters.

"A TURTLE IN TIME" GETS A: 2/5 RATING.
