Cyber Turtles (Episode 177) Review

BRIEF STORYLINE: The turtles are in the middle of an investigation into the robbery of a special, rare telescope called the Astro Viewer, but what disturbs them is these strange tracks leading away from the building of the National Space Exploration Center.

Elsewhere, at the Hall of Science, Krang and Shredder are there and are the ones who stole the Astro Viewer and have installed to hopefully create a dimensional portal. Krang sees through the telescope an alien StarFighter flying close to Earth. He has found out they have the Firestar in their possession and gives them the power to be masters of the universe.

This excites Krang immensely, as he thought the Firestar was only a folk tale. It has the power comparable to a thousand suns. Krangs wants it for himself, and believes he is the rightful owner of it.

Krang lowers the StarFighter own using lasers. Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady arrive to the shock of the crew inside, who are Commander Korak and his members of the Glaxxon Federation. Shredder steals the FireStar and heads back to the Hall of Science.

April and the turtles get to the crash site of the FireStar and are unluckily met by Commander Korak and his Glaxxons. They wrongly accuse the turtles of stealing their spaceship.

The turtles try to explain themselves to help if anyone was injured from the crash. Commander Korak doesn't see them as friends and throws them in a cell.

April is trying to get in touch with the vigilante Casey Jones to help her rescue the turtles. Can that maniac be the the turtles saving grace? Can it be done before the Glaxxons lose their temper over the StarFighter and destroy this world?

TMNT REVIEW HQ COMMENTS: A somewhat original good episode. We are introduced to a new gang of characters called the Glaxxons, led by Commander Korak, an alien race from far away. The episode starts off well with the turtles and April looking into the Astro-Viewer robbery.

The major happening of the crash of the Glaxxon's StarFighter is well done, as Shredder and Krang drool over it's emergence, once thought to be fiction. The Glaxxons are not really very weird looking aliens, but based on Earth animals like lions and lizards, that act like humans.

The cyber suits are huge things, that the Glaxxons control, however, the turtles seem to have their own, with the first letter of their name etched on the suit. I would say this is quite original, but it is possible it is an idea borrowed from the Power Rangers. Most of the cyber-suits are cool looking though.

There isn't a great deal of humour. One humourous line comes from Raphael in his cyber suit, when 2 of the turtles leave him and one other turtle to fend off the Glaxxons, with "are we gluttons for punishment!".

A definite surprising twist is Casey Jones returning to the cartoon, who hasn't been seen since the 1989 season.

This all leads to long-drawn but most entertaining action scene that sees Casey feuding with Shredder, and the turtles smashing the Glaxxon's cyber suits. There is a nice good flow to the action, which blends well in the editing department. The next scenes after this are all well done, and this is the strongest part of the episode.

The ending is perhaps gives off a realistic edge to the storyline, as the Glaxxons should have to face off other alien races to stop them getting their hands on the FireStart before destroying it. However, this was the first and last episode appearance of the Glaxxons, and we did not know if they were successful in destroying the FireStar.

"CYBER TURTLES" GETS A: 3/5 RATING.
