Splinter No More (Episode 14) Review

BRIEF STORYLINE: Splinter is starting to feel depressed of life as a mutant rat, and misses the normality and universal acceptance of being a human being. Luckily the turtles have a little mutagen left, that could be mixed to make a formula that will reverse Splinter's mutation, and he will become Hamato Yoshi again. It works successfully, and Yoshi relishes his return as a human and goes for a walk in the city.

April is doing her usual news reporting to the TV camera's in a local library, when she suddenly spots Bebop and Rocksteady. She contacts the turtles with great haste. At this point in time, the turtles are stressing over maybe the human Splinter wants to go back into society again like old times, and will be too happy to return to the misfits, the TMNT. The Bebop and Rocksteady sighting, leaves space for some light relief, but they also remind each other Shredder must be not too far away.

At the library, the TMNT confront Shredder and co, who then slip out of their hands yet again. However, they leave a vital clue that could reveal what the villains are up to. It's a spell that will summon a portal to any dimension they wish. The turtles find a nexus, which is a temple in an old subway terminal that attracts the doorways to different dimensions.

Hamato Yoshi is enjoying a walk through Central Park, but he can feel the effects of the mutagen wearing off, and he becomes Splinter again. He now looks like a freak to the surrounding humans, and an angry mob chases him, as well as cops.

Can Splinter get back to the lair before the mob catches up with him? Is this the end of Hamato Yoshi? Can the turtles stop Shredder having another go at a way to bring the Technodrome to Earth? Shredder uses a device called the NeuroScrambler that causes the turtles to fight and argue amongst each other. Can anyone stop this mess?

TMNT REVIEW HQ COMMENTS: A good episode with a potential serious dilemma for the turtles, their future without Splinter. Nothing much to note about the start apart from a few humorous lines, such as when Shredder is looking in the library for the key(a spell) to opening a portal, and Bebop thinks there is an actual key in the book. Also as the turtles are lurking nearby, and Donatello is talking way too loud for Raphael's ears, so replies in his usual witty fashion, "keep it down to a roar, Don!". Then there's a good pun line from one of the turtles as they tackle Bebop and Rocksteady by knocking the gas/steam out of a radiator, and states that Bebop and Rocksteady will be "steamed" now.

One of the best scenes is also one of the most important, when Splinter mutates and we see the welcome return of Hamato Yoshi (Splinter's name in his human form). Krang is comedy gold in this episode, we see him getting contacted by Shredder at a badly timed private moment, as Krang (and his android) have been in the shower, wrapping a towel around his waist, and with a shower cap on. Has to be seen to be believed!

The episode portrays the idleness and discrimination of being a mutant well, as when Yoshi becomes Splinter, an angry mob of humans chase him, which isn't very civilised!

The good humour continues, with Bebop saying a line that is funny because it's something you think you wouldn't hear from an individual that unintelligent, he calls the New York sewers "sub-standard housing". This was done numerous times throughout the cartoon with Bebop and Rocksteady.

A good twist is the turtles turning and fighting each other thanks to Shredder's NeuroScrambler, and adds to the problems the turtles face.

The episode has a strong finish. There's something funny about when Shredder almost finishes his spell for the portal to Dimension X. Thanks to Splinter it became "Dimension...STOP!". This leads to a giant one eye tentacled monster grabbing and attacking everyone in a memorable finale, with a dramatic collapsing of the chamber, as it becomes no more. Its a most suitable but predictable ending, as Splinter is happy as a rat mutant.

"SPLINTER NO MORE" GETS A: 3/5 RATING.
