Split Second (Episode 184) Review

BRIEF STORYLINE: At the Antique Timepiece Museum, Carter, April and the turtles investigate a break-in. They feel the culprit is likely to be Dregg. The turtles then discover a clue of "LT" and "LL" above and below a row of clocks on the wall. Donatello comes to the conclusion that they stand for Longitude and Latitude. He adds the numbers on the clocks, which somehow gives him the co-ordinates of a location called the NorthWest Steel Mall.

The turtles decide to see if the suspect is Dregg again. They don't see a connection to Dregg, and they meet an unknown villain to them called Chronos. He is the Master of Time and King of the Clocktower. He is obsessed with clocks and time you see. Chronos escapes but vows to continue his crime spree, and dares the turtles to bring it on, and try to stop him.

Even though this is their first confrontation with Chronos, the turtles find him suspiciously familiar. The turtles split in to 2 to abruptly halt both of Chronos upcoming crimes. April does her own task, and find out this guy's real name, and why he has turned to crime.

Returning to the lair, the Intruder Alarm wails and Splinter unfortunately has to deal with Chronos.

Who is this Chronos, and why the obsession with clocks? Is he allied with Dregg? Can the turtles defeat this unpredictable nutter??

TMNT REVIEW HQ COMMENTS: Another shoddy episode, tut tut. The start isn't edited well, as we see Carter training his martial arts with Leonardo. However, there's a good build-up to the unveiling of this brand new villain Chronos, who the turtles all assume its Dregg who is the culprit. So the first major action piece is ok, but there is more negatives than positives in this episode.

Chronos is very much like "The Riddler" from "Batman" with the same crazed persona and the laugh you might hear in the Batman 60s TV series. He has orange hair, just like the Riddler from the movies. The only exception is, he doesn't wear green and he is obsessed with time. It is an interesting story of how he became this nutter, when he was normal, and then got locked up in a clocktower with the constant dinging of the bells driving him mad.

There's a funny scene from Raphael as he groans at the prospect of a flashback section of the show. The final battle to defeat Chronos is the best action-packed part of the episode, willing his clock robots to unhand those turtles. Dregg turns up in the very end, and we find out he was giving Chronos orders all along, which is not that surprising as this season is all centered around him. In a better surprise, he fools the people of Earth that he has captured Chronos.

It's a nice ending for your funny bone, as Raphael is getting sick of these time references that "you'll get a time out from me", raising his fist during this. A timely finish!

"SPLIT SECOND" GETS A: 2/5 RATING.
