The Wrath of Medusa (Episode 181) Review

BRIEF STORYLINE: Dregg is compulsed into thinking that it is only the turtles who stand in the way of world domination. He desperately wants this substance called Neutronium Ore. Dregg then gets in touch with an old friend, Medusa, a beautiful yet crooked female alien. Dregg sees her as the key to bringing down the turtles.

Medusa lures the turtles into a fight at the hydroelectric plant. Then Hi-Tech succeeds in getting the Techno gangster's back to the Neutronium mine, and are free to carry on with their precious workload.

At the plant, Carter, now a mutant nearly smashes the dam to pieces, causing possible worldwide doom. Amidst the confusion, Medusa grabs and enslaves Leonardo. Her goal is to sell him and the rest of the turtles to another part of the galaxy.

Carter, returns to his human form, and blames himself for losing Leonardo. He now wants to spend more quality time with Splinter to learn how to control his sometimes pestering mutation.

The 3 turtles now have to meet Medusa at the World Broadcast Tower to get their old buddy back! Can they work together as a team? And what about their ever-unstable mutations, and they don't know how it will affect them in a positive or a negative way?

TMNT REVIEW HQ COMMENTS: Only a decent episode, however good to see a another female villain, which were a rarity in the TMNT series. We get right into the thick of the action as the episode starts, in this underground tunnel mine as the turtles and Carter fight the Techno gang again. Its a solid start, with the highlight being Raphael and Carter's mutant exchange of words, with Raphael telling him to control himself more, and be more of a team player.

Dregg hires Medusa, who looks like a green-skinned, female bodybuilder in a super-hero costume (no cape) with a rocket thruster back pack. You know, in the style of Wonder-woman in the comic books, with those over-exaggerated athletic frames and thigh muscles. She also has that high-and-mighty voice much like Tempestra who was in the 1990 season, and she has these orange/red pigtails that seem to have a life of it's own and defy the laws of gravity. Standards fall down however, when Medusa first confronts the turtles where the action editing is bad. Also, moments of importance like the turtles falling down the giant dam should've been more effective and dramatic.

It's interesting to see later on, when Leonardo, captured by "Thunderthighs" Medusa, how the other 3 cope with this challenge and lack of leadership. For this is the episode, where we see, for the very first time, the turtles mutated into their new forms, for only temporarily, as these uglier looking, but bigger and stronger, almost monster-like turtle creatures. It's Medusa who makes them angry to get like this, as the 3 turtles are in a tight spot. Medusa can't handle the hulk turtles and, although no stranger to a "thigh master", she runs away using the guidance of the rocket thruster on her back. The mutated turtles faces look more angular, and have gruff voices which are comical to hear.

However, more good editing is on the way, which includes the turtles searching for "whole lotta thigh" Medusa and the aftermath of the turtles strange mutations. Medusa seems to just come across as more of a rascal than an evil villain, so maybe it was it wouldn't have been a "thigh-nancially" sound decision to make her the headline villain instead of Dregg.

The ending isn't that great. Dregg's satellite plan goes up in smoke, with more lousy editing, and the "thigh-nal" battle between Medusa and the turtles is dissappointing. Apart from the cool animation of when Medusa evaporates into thin air. However, i like the cliffhanger it comes to, Dregg twisting the truth on TV and saying the turtles caused the satellite to explode!

"THE WRATH OF MEDUSA" GETS A: 3/5 RATING.
