Barcelona turned in another
soccer exhibition on Saturday as a seven-minute hat-trick from
Dani Garcia led them to a 4-1 Camp Nou win over Real Betis.
The Catalans, fresh from a dazzling 4-2 win over Fiorentina
in the Champions League on Wednesday, recovered from a
controversial opening goal from Miroslav Karhan on 37 minutes to
take the lead before halftime with Dani's first two goals.
And after Betis had Luis Fernandez sent off at the start of
the second half there was no stopping Barcelona, who were 4-1 up
by the 50th minute as Luis Enrique Martinez nodded in a Pep
Guardiola free kick and Dani grabbed his third.
The result took Barcelona back up to top spot in the Spanish
first division, ahead of Rayo Vallecano on goal difference,
although Rayo can return to the summit with just a draw at home
to Real Zaragoza on Sunday.
Earlier, Real Madrid had stumbled to a 1-1 draw at Malaga,
an own goal from Francisco Rufete gifting John Toshack's side
the lead in first half injury time before Txomin Larrainzar
equalised with a header 12 minutes into the second half.
Real are still unbeaten but have now drawn their last three
league games to lie three points off the title pace.
Celta Vigo moved up to fourth with a 2-0 win at Real
Sociedad, Russian internationals Alexander Mostovoi and Valery
Karpin getting the goals.
Struggling Valencia could manage no better than a goalless
draw against Valladolid, who played for 65 minutes with 10 men.
At the Nou Camp, Karhan's surprise opener came after a
controversial decision from the referee, who ruled that a Frank
de Boer interception, which rolled through to Ruud Hesp, was a
backpass.
The ensuing indirect free kick, just inside the area, was
touched wide to Karhan and the Slovak international smashed
home.
Barcelona's response was swift and brutal. With an 80,000
crowd beginning to get restless, Barca equalised on 43 minutes
as Dani was on hand to snap up after Rivaldo's speculative shot
was spilled by Toni Prats.
And Louis van Gaal's side were ahead on the stroke of
halftime, with Prats once again at fault.
Sergi Barjuan's near post cross was missed by the keeper and
Dani found himself unmarked to tap in once again.
The sending-off of Fernandez three minutes after the break
for a second bad foul on Dani effectively settled the match.
Luis Enrique made it 3-1 a minute later after Guardiola's
precise cross gave him a simple header.
And a minute later Dani completed his hat-trick as he
reacted fastest to a loose ball in the area following more good
work from Luis Enrique.
The place slackened after that as van Gaal, with one eye on
Wednesday's Champions League date with Arsenal, took off Rivaldo
and Luis Enrique.
