Figo[23SEP99] BARCELONA, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Barcelona demonstrated their Champions League intent with a commanding 4-2 victory over Fiorentina in a one-sided group B clash on Wednesday. Brazilian forward Rivaldo scored two of the Barca goals, one from the penalty spot, but it was Luis Figo who turned in the star display, scoring the first, having a hand in the second for Luis Enrique Martinez and winning the second half penalty. Christian Amoroso and Gabriel Batistuta scored the Fiornetina goals, converting two of only four chances the Italians created all night. Louis van Gaal's side, who have crashed out of Europe at the opening league stage in each of the last two seasons due to poor home performances, ensured there would be no repeat of past errors as they turned in an inspired attacking display. The Catalans netted twice inside 10 minutes through Figo and Luis Enrique to grab the match by the scruff of the neck. And after Fiorentina had briefly threatened to make a game of it -- Amoroso reducing the arrears with a neat flick from Gabriel Batistuta's free kick -- Rivaldo took over to settle the match. The Brazilian fired in a penalty on 68 minutes after Figo had been sandwiched in the area by Tomas Repka and Pasquale Padalino and then wrapped things up with a classy, wrong-footing finish after he was found in the area by Luis Enrique. Substitute Enrico Chiesa then gave Fiorentina an unlikely lifeline with 10 minutes to go but Barcelona held out comfortably to hold on to top spot in their group, with maximum points from two games. Fiorentina coach Giovanni Trapattoni was impressed by a more attacking approach than he had expected. "Barcelona were very aggressive from the start," said Trapattoni. "And we committed the same errors as against Arsenal." For Louis van Gaal, the performance from Barcelona was far from perfect. "We should have taken more chances in the first half," said the hard to please Dutchman. "We played fantistically well in that first period. "But we've played that well before -- in two games against Manchester United last year -- and there's still a long way to go." Barcelona were irresistible in the opening period and they took control of the match with a breathtaking spell of attacking football that brought two goals and might easily have seen them go further ahead. Figo made the breakthrough on seven minutes as he took advantage of a hesitant Fiorentina defence, which backed off suicidially as he moved into the area. The Portuguese international, jinking inside, smashed a right-foot shot which appeared to take a slight deflection before whistling inside Francesco Toldo's near post. Figo had a leading role in the second, too, just three minutes later as his inswinging cross, meant for Kluivert, was only partially cleared. The ball dropped invitingly for Luis Enrique, who skipped past one challenge and into the area before thumping the ball past another despairing dive from Toldo. Fiorentina gradually gained a foothold in midfield as the Barca attacks subsided somewhat but they rarely threatened themselves and it looked only a matter of time before the third goal came as Figo, with a delicate chip from the edge of the area, and Rivaldo both went close. Fiorentina came out with renewed intent in the second half, breaking through Predrag Mijatovic, the former Real Madrid striker who had a miserable night, and Gabriel Batistuta. It was Batistuta who created the first Fiorentina goal as his smartly struck free kick was turned in by Amoroso with a delicate backheel, wrong-footing Ruud Hesp. Rivaldo's subsequent intervention set Barca clear once again and Chiesa's neat finish with 10 minutes to go, after Winston Bogarde had missed a hopeful long ball through the middle, was too little too late for the Italians.
