This is an early marrige record of Perry Co Marriages posted on the Knot Co Ky genweb site, Marriages from 1821 to 1846. This work orginally appeared in The East Kentuckian and was later donated in April 1979 to Perry Co Library entitled Missing Brides in Perry Co Ky by Dorothy Griffith.
In this list of marriages is: JOHN HOBBS MARRIED ??? ON OCT 28, 1830. I believe this is my John Hobbs, who had his first child around 1831 and three of them were in Breathitt (Perry first) Co Ky. 1889: George Hobbs remarries to Mary Jane Hill Dunlap on June 8, 1889 in Lincoln Co WV. George Hobbs age 56, born Breathitt Co Ky, and Mary Jane age 40 born Kanawha Co WV. They have one daughter, Mary Hobbs born Aug 22 1889, Kanawha Co WV.

George Hobbs dies in 1904 and is buried at Lively Cem in Lincoln Co WV. I believe that Lydia Honaker Hobbs was buried at the Honaker Cem. She had a brother and several cousins that had already moved to WV and George was not buried with any other family that I can find. Story is that neither side of the families, Hobbs, Dunlap or Hills approved of George and MaryJanes marriage. Could be why they moved from Lincoln Co to Kanawha Co WV.

He later has a son, Gilburt Lewis, Sept 15, 1903 who dies April 1 1954 and marries Garnett Hodson. Eli & Martha also have a daughter, Virgie Lee Hobbs , on July 11, 1904, Lincoln Co WV and ADA MAE HOBBS, born May 9 1907 at Byrnside WV (d) Nov 1975 in Michigan. LOUISA HOBBS ,(george,john) "sometimes called LIZA" daughter of George & Lydia was born 1861 in, Buchanan Co VA. She marries a CHARLIE BALL in Russell Co VA and either leaves or divorces him while living in Lincoln Co WV . She has at least one son by Charlie; William Jasper Ball born Feb 12, 1885 who marries Lula Fleeman in Lincoln Co WV.
There is a Charles W Ball age 17 living beside Louisa Hobbs in Russell Co 1880 census, and it is a possiblity that this is the Charlie BAll she first married. Louisa supposedly married a Thompson man in Kanawha Co WV in later years.
ROSINA HOBBS (george, john) daughter of George & Lydia was born in 1862, Buchanan Co VA. She married Columbus V. L. Hall,(b) June 5, 1855 Kanawha Co WV: son of William and Elizabeth {Tully} HALL.
Columbus Hall was a preacher and married several members of the HOBBS family, including my grandparents, Odor & Hettie Griffith Hobbs. My grandparents were married in 1916, Columbus is in 1920 census, but Rosa is a widow in 1930 census, so we have Columbus' death date after 1920 and Rosa is after 1930. Exact date is not known.

2. SAMUEL HOBBS was born in 1837, in Breathitt Co Ky and served in the Civil War. 22nd and 34th , with his brother George Hobbs. married CHARLOTTE GROSS, Dec 7, 1858. inBuchanan Co VA. Charlotte was the daughter of Raleigh and Wilmouth {Terry} Gross, Tazewell Co WV. Samuel & Charlotte are in Buchanan Co VA 1860 census, Tazewell Co Va 1870 census, Russell Co Va 1880 census and I have no proof that they ever left Russell Co Va, but I have not found a death date for either of them as yet. There were no land entrys for Samuel in Tazewell Co Va courthouse, however, one of his sons wrote a letter telling of his father, Sam Hobbs owning land on Dismal Creek outside of Grundy Va and in the 1860 annotated census of Buchanan Co Va, there is 40 acres of land listed beside Samuel Hobbs' name.
Also for anyone researching Samuel Hobbs, there is a note on the Civil War REcords of Buchanan Co Va that Samuel Hobbs married 1866, 2nd wife Catherine Shrader. This is false information. Samuel and Charlotte are listed thru 1880 census of Russell Co Va. He never remarries and I cannot even find a Charlotte Shrader in Russell or Buchanan Co Va. I don't know where that info came from, but do not put it into your family files.

I have received information , letters, and pictures of this family line from Mary Evanoff, granddaughter of John and Belle Hobbs; They moved around frequentl, which seems to be a HOBBS trait. We know they were in Wise Co Va (per death record) in 1893; In 1902, they lived in Norton VA, in 1909, Clinton, Ky; 1913, Banner , VA; 1917, English, WV (McDowell Co); and Coalwood WV; They also went to Texas for a short while, buying property and then losing for failure to pay taxes, around 1919/20; Fallerton Tx: John Hobbs and Nannie Belle Lowe died in Pennsylvania and are buried there. I also have a copy of Nannie Belles death notice in the paper. Nannie BElle said she was 17 when she married when in fact she was only 14. Her three sisters were mentioned in her death notice in the PA paper. Mrs Mattie Peak, GAry WV; Mrs Victoria Dial, Raysal WV; and Mrs Sarah Dunavent, Norton Va and 2 brothers, John Lowe, Chesapeake WV and Tom Lowe of Pikeville KY. She had lived in Pittsburgh Pa for the last 14 years of her life and attended the Gospel TAbernacle in New Kensington.

(b) 1869, Tazewell Co VA (m) Jefferson Davis Lowe, Aug 5, 1887, Tazewell Va. source: Tazewell Co marriage records, Vol. 3, pg.78: Jefferson Lowe (b) abt 1862 was the s/o Joseph & Melissa Lowe of Tazewell Va. Nancy dies before the 1900 census; Jefferson Davis is listed as widow and living with his brother in Tazewell Co VA 1900 census. No children were born to this marriage.
5. Mary E. Hobbs (b) 1870, Tazewell Va. (m) Floyd Blankenship, April 19, 1896, Tazewell Va: source: Tazewell Co marriage records, Vol 3. pg. 119. * Floyd the s/o: John and Alice or Olivia Blankenship. (hard to read) I have not been able to find anything other than a marriage record for this family.

8. Charles B. Hobbs (b) 1878, Russell Co VA (m) Martha Stump Honaker, 1908, Russell Co Va.: Martha had been married 1st to Lilburn Honaker, first cousin to Charles Hobbs, he died and Martha married Charles Hobbs. I have a letter that Charlie wrote to his neice in 1932 and he speaks of poor Aunt Martha being old and broken down and how they were barely making ends meet, and his asthma was getting worse.

Thanks to Millie I found Mary Hobbs & James Gibson in Clay Co WV in the 1880 census.
The youngest daughter of John & Nancy Hobbs was recorded on the 1850 Tazewell Co Va census as Ailsey, probably Alice age 4. She is not in the 1860 census, so we are assuming she died as a young girl. I cannot find her in the Tazewell Co deaths, so she must have died in Buchannan Co before 1860.

Considering that my HOBBS family used the names John, Eli, Samuel, and George, from 1830 to 1900, it would be a "good guess" that the father of John Hobbs (b) abt 1805 in Kentucky is also named either, John, Eli, or Samuel. Vincent Hobbs (court records say he had been in Va attending business), Ezekiel Hobbs, Christopher & Jenny Hobbs, William Blanton, Hannah Hobbs, Rachael Hobbs, Nancy Hobbs, : this was a court case of assult and battery against John & Barbara Hudson.
I also have information by email on the lineage of Vincent Hobbs, Washington Co VA: His daughter Hannah Hobbs married William Blanton. Vincent also had a daughter named Rachel and a son named William who supposedly died in Kentucky.
