History of the Pi Mu Chapter

The Pi Mu Chapter is located in the South Atlantic Region, which was organized in 1960 and is the second largest region of the Sorority. The South Atlantic Region is comprised of 165 alumnae and collegiate chapters of the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and the country of Bermuda. The motto for this region is "The Vision for the New Millennium: Sincere Sisterhood, Significant Scholarship and Stellar Service."

In April of 1987, the Pi Mu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on the campus of Longwood College in Farmville, VA. However, the road to joining the great sisterhood started long before that date. For many years, a determined group of strong Black women steadfastly pursued their dream of becoming a part of the sisterhood. Their endeavors to establish a chapter on the small, predominantly white campus were met with many obstacles. One such hindrance was finding a Delta who was an active member of the Sorority as well as a staff member of the institution to be their advisor.

They were blessed in 1986 when Dr. Brenda Cross joined the staff of Longwood College. Upon finding out that Dr. Cross was indeed a member of the very organization that they longed to join, they implored her assistance. Under her guidance and direction, nine passionately determined service-minded women began the necessary steps in becoming a chartered chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The nine charter members are Tamara Brown, Jeris Hill, Linette Jones, Patricia Keene, Lisa Redding, Wanda Shelton, Sheri Stanford, Bonita Turner, and Kathleen Watkins. These women had hearts full of love and service and provided Longwood and the surrounding community with a commitment to unity, service, and the moral values that live deep within the hearts of all Delta women.

Tribute to Charter Line

To the charter line of Pi Mu
We dedicate this tribute to you
In nineteen hundred and eighty-seven
The Lord spoke three words from heaven
Delta...Sigma...Theta

Because there was so much work to do
He needed nine strong women who would see it through
To Lynnette Jones and Lisa Redding
He gave compassion and courtesy to guide the line steady
To Bonita Turner and Patricia Keene
He gave dedication and fellowship to help focus the dream
To Kathleen Watkins and Tamera Brown
He gave fidelity and honesty so the truth would always be found
To Wanda Shelton and Jeris Hill
He gave justice and purity and the hyperthrust to do Delta's will
And, to Sheri Stanford
He gave temperance and the ability to help them rise above any circumstance
So, we thank you Mission Control
For answering the call
That was heard by few, but desired by all.

Through the years, many women have become a part of the Pi Mu Chapter. Each one striving to uphold the goals and principles set forth by our beloved Founders while striving to follow in the footsteps of the exemplary nine. The chapter has undertaken projects including its annual Thanksgiving food drives along with the Christmas Angel Tree and the Longwood Christmas Party for Kids. Other projects include the Longwood College Minority Scholarship Ball, the Martin Luther King, Jr. "A Day On, Not a Day Off" Literacy Program, and Breast Cancer Awareness. Pi Mu has also sponsored Brownie Troop 696 in its efforts to mentor and mold other young minds. From April 28, 1987 through today and forever, the Pi Mu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is indeed a sisterhood bound by love.
