WELCOME TO MY BEISEL PAGE. Carl Matthias BEISSEL was born in June 1829,
in Strümpfelbrunn, Baden; and baptized on 18 June 1829, in the Evangelische Kirche in Strümpfelbrunn. Carl was the son of Johann Matthaus Be˙sel and Eva Catharina WEISS.
Carl came to the U.S.A. aboard the ship "Germania," which arrived in
New York, on 11 Nov 1857. In the United States, he began calling himself "Charles."
On 21 Jan 1864, Charles enlisted in the New York State Militia. Information
given on military records lists Charles BEISEL's occupation as "farmer."
His physical description is given as, "Blue eyes, brown hair and dark
complexion. Height 5 ft. 5 in." Charles served (as a blacksmith) in both the 4th and 9th
Cavalry Regiments. He was mustered out on 17 Jul 1865, in Cloud's Mills,
Virginia.
Charles married Eva Rosina STEURER before 27 Aug 1864, as he is listed as "married" on military documents of that date. After the Civil War, Carl worked as a blacksmith.
