Christ was crucified on Friday and arose
from the tomb on Sunday morning. Right? I don't think so. I believe the
Bible tells us clearly that Christ died on a Wednesday and arose on a Saturday. Using a
standard KJV Bible, I have compiled a chronological record of the events from the
supper at Bethany to the empty tomb. This is not an all inclusive table of events, but I
have included the main points of each day. This webpage is what I believe actually
happened. It is taken entirely from the Bible (except a couple of parts added for
clarity which do not effect the story). I have also changed the archaic King James to
a more readable modern English. The words of the disciples are in purple (because of IPe 2.9), Christ's words are in red, and all other words which are spoken are in green. There are a few direct quotes used throughout which are
written in blue (for the Holy Spirit). I hope you enjoy
reading this, and your comments are more then welcomed. You are also welcomed
to visit my other webpage at http://www.bcity.com/graphotech.. Then six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany.
This is where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
Many of the
Jewish people knew that He was there. They came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they
might see Lazarus also, whom He had raised from the dead. Then the chief priests and
the scribes and the elders of the people assembled together in the palace of the high
priest, who was Caiaphas. There they consulted how they might take Jesus by craft and
kill Him. But they said, Not on the Feast day, less there be an
uproar among the people. The chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus
to death also; because by reason of him many of the Jews went away and believed on
Jesus.
On the next day, when they drew
near to Jerusalem, and had come to Bethphage, to the mount of Olives, then Jesus sent
two disciples ahead, saying to them, Go into the city over there. You
shall find an ass tied, with a colt with her: untie them and bring them to Me. If any one
says anything to you, say "The Lord has need of them", and he will send them right
away. The two disciples entered the city and found the ass as He had said. As
they were untying the colt, the owners came up to them and said,
Why are you untying the colt? They answered, The Lord
has need of him. Then they brought him to Jesus.
Nisan 8 (March 31,
28AD) Thursday
Nisan 9 (April 1, 28AD) Friday
There in Bethany in the house of Simon
the leper, they made Him a supper, and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that
sat at the table with Him.
Then, as He sat at supper, Mary, having an alabaster box
of ointment, took a pound of ointment of spikenard which was very costly and very
precious, and broke it and poured it on His head. Then anointed His feet with it and
wiped His feet with her hair. The whole house was filled with the aroma of the
ointment.
But, when His disciples saw it, there were some that had indignation
within themselves and said,
Why was this waste of the
ointment made?, and they murmured against her. Then one of His disciples,
Judas Iscariot, Simon's son which would betray Him, said,
Why was this ointment not sold for more then a year's wages? Then the money
given to the poor?
This he said not because he cared for the poor, but because
he was a thief, and had the bag, and carried what was in it.
When Jesus understood
what was being said, He said to them, Why do you trouble the
woman? Let her alone: for she has done a good work upon Me. Against the day of My
burial she has kept this. For in that she has poured this ointment on My body, she did it
for My burial. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you will you may
do them good: but Me you do not always have. Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel
shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she has done shall be spoken
of for a memorial of her.
Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the
chief priests, to betray Him to them. When they heard it, they were glad, and promised to
give him money. Then he sought how he might conveniently betray Him.Nisan 10 (April 2, 28AD) Saturday
All this was done, that it
might be fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet, Tell
you the daughter of Zion, Behold, your king comes to you,
meek, and sitting upon an
ass, and a colt of an ass.
His disciples did not understand these
things at first, but when Jesus was gloified, then they remembered that these things were
written of Him, and that they had done these things for Him.
They cast their
garments upon the colt, then set Jesus on him. As He went, they spread their clothes in
the way. When He came near, even at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole
multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the
mighty works that they had seen. A very great multitude that had come to the Feast,
spread their garments in the way. Others cut down branches from the trees and threw
them in the way. Then the multitude that went before Him and the one that followed,
cried,
Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is the King of Israel that comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.
Some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said
to Him, Master, rebuke your disciples. He answered, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would
immediately cry out.
When He had come near, He beheld the city and wept
over it. If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the
things which belong to your peace! But now they are hid from your eyes. For the days
shall come upon you, that your enemies shall cast a trench about you, and compass you
around, and keep you in on every side. They shall lay you even with the ground, and your
children within you; they shall not leave in you one stone upon another; because you
knew not the time of your visitation.
The Pharisees therefore said among
themselves,Do you perceive how we prevail nothing? Behold, the
world is gone after Him.
Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the Temple:
when He had looked about upon all things, the evening had come and He went out into
Bethany with the twelve.
Now in the morning when they were coming from Bethany, as He returned into the city, He was hungry. When He saw a fig tree in the way afar off having leaves, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, for the time of the figs was not yet. He said to it, Let no fruit grow on you from here on, let no man eat fruit from you hereafter for ever. His disciples heard it.
When He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? The multitude said, This is
Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.
Jesus went into the Temple of God
and began to cast out all them that sold and bought in the Temple, and overthrew the
tables of the moneychangers and the seats of them that sold doves, and would not allow
any man to carry any vessel through the Temple. He taught them, It is
written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of
prayer but you have made it a den of thieves.
The blind and the lame
came to Him in the Temple; and He healed them. When the chief priests and scribes saw
the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying in the Temple, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were very displeased and said
to Him, Do You hear what these say? Jesus said, Yes; have you never read: Out of the mouth of babes
and sucklings You have perfected praise?
He left them and went out
of the city into Bethany where He lodged.
The scribes and chief priests heard it, and
sought how they might destroy Him: for they feared Him and could not find what they
might do: because all the people were astonished at His doctrine.
In the morning,as they passed by,
they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. When the disciples saw it, they marveled,
saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away! Peter
recalling the day before, said, Master, behold, the fig tree which
You cursed is withered away. Jesus answered, Have faith in
God. For truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you shall not only do this
which is done to the fig tree, but also whoever shall say to the mountain, "Be you
removed, and be cast into the sea" if he shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that
those things which he said shall come to pass, he shall have whatever he said. Therefore
I say to you, whatever things you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them,
and you shall have them.
When you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything
against anyone: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your
trespasses.
When He came into the Temple, the chief priests and the scribes
and the elders of the people came to Him as He was teaching, and said,Tell us, by what authority do You do these things? Who is he that gave
You this authority?
Jesus answered, I will ask you
something also, which if you tell me, I also will tell you by what authority I do these
things. The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men? Answer
me.
They reasoned with themselves, If we say "from
heaven", He will say to us "Why then did you not believe him?", but if we shall say "Of
men", we fear the people, for they all hold John as a prophet. They answered
Jesus, We cannot tell You.
After Jesus had told
some parables, when the chief priests and Pharisees perceived that He spoke of them,
they sought to lay hands on Him the same hour. But when they did, they feared the
multitude, because they took Him for a prophet.
They watched Him and sent spies,
which should pretend to be just men, that they might take hold of His words as they
might deliver Him into the power and authority of the governor. Then certain of the
scribes said to Him, Master, You have well said. After that
they dared not ask Him any more questions at all. He said to them,
How do they say that Christ is David's son? David himself said in the book of
Psalms:The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on My right
hand,
'till I make Your enemies Your footstool.
David,
therefore, called Him Lord, how is He then his son?
Then in the audience of
all the people He said to His disciples, Beware of the scribes, which
desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in
the synagogues, and the chief rooms at Feasts; which devour widows' houses, and for a
show, make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, He said to His disciples, You know that after two days is the Feast of Passover, and of Unleavened Bread, and the Son of Man is betrayed to be crucified.
Now came the
first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, the
disciples came to Jesus and said, Where do You want us to prepare
for You to eat the Passover?
He sent two of His disciples, Peter and John,
saying, Go and prepare us the Passover, that we may eat. Go into the
city and there shall you meet a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. Wherever he
shall go in, say to the goodman of the house, "The Master said, My time is at hand; where
is the guestchamber, I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples". He will
show you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.
The disciples did as Jesus had appointed them and they prepared the
Passover.
Now when
the evening had come, when the hour had come to keep the Passover, He sat down with
the twelve. He said to them,
With desire I have desired to eat this
Passover with you before I suffer: for I say to you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it
be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
He took the cup and gave thanks,
**As He poured the first of the four cups of wine, the cup of
deliverance, He lifted His face to God and said, Blessed are You, O
Lord our God, King of the universe. Who creates the fruit of the vine. Blessed are You,
O Lord our God, Who has chosen us for Your servants from among the nations. Blessed
are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has kept us in life, Who has
preserved us, and has emabled us to reach this season.
Jesus removed the
middle piece of unleavened bread and broke it in half. John, the youngest of the
disciples, leaned his head upon Jesus' chest and asked the four questions
required:Why is this night different from all others?
On all other nights we eat either leavened of unleavened bread, but on this night only
unleavened?
In response, Jesus took the second cup of wine, the
cup of freedom, and blessed it, then explained the Exodus story to His
disciples.
On all other nights we eat all kinds of herbs, but on this night only bitter
herbs?
On all other nights we do not dip even once, but on this night we dip
twice?
On all other nights we eat either sitting of reclining, but on this night we eat
reclining?
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands,
and that He was come from God, and went to God; He arose from supper, and laid aside
His garments. He took a towel and girded Himself. After that He poured water into a
bason and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel. Now I tell you before it comes, that, when it comes to pass,
you may believe that I AM He.
Then
He came to Peter, and Peter said to Him,Lord, do You wash my
feet?
Jesus answered What I do you know not now, but
you shall know hereafter.
Peter answered, You shall
never wash my feet.
If I wash you not, you have no part with
Me.
Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my
head.
He that is washed need only to wash his feet and is clean
everywhere: you are clean, but not all.
For He knew
who should betray Him, therefore He said You are not all
clean. So after He had washed their feet, and had put on His garments, and was
set down again, He said to them,
Know you what I have done to
you? You call Me Master and Lord: and you say well, for I AM. If I then, your Lord and
Master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have
given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
Truly, truly, I say to
you, the servant is not greater then his lord, neither he that is sent greater then He that
sent him. If you know these things, happy are you if you do them. I speak not to you all:
I know whom I have chosen, but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against
Me.
Truly I say to you, one of you which eats with Me shall
betray Me. Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom He
spoke. They were exceedingly sorrowful, and began to say to Him,
Lord, is it I?
Is it I?
It is one of the
twelve. He that dips his hand with Me in the dish, the same shall betray Me. The Son of
Man goes as it is written of Him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is
betrayed! It had been good for that man if he had not been born.
Now there
was leaning on Jesus' breast one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter
therefore beckoned to him that he should ask who it should be of whom He spoke. He
then said to Him, Lord, who is it?
It
is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread, when I have dipped it.
Then
Judas, which betrayed Him, said, Master, is it I?
You have said.
Jesus took bread and blessed it. He broke it and
gave it to the disciples, saying,
Take this, and divide it among
yourselves. Eat: this is My body which is given for you: this do in rememberance of
Me.
When He had dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot. After the
dipped bread Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him,
That what you do, do quickly.
Now no man at the table knew for
what intent He spoke to him. For some of them thought, because Judas had the money
bag, that Jesus had said to him, Buy those things that we have need of
for the Feast; or that he should give something to the poor. He then having
receivied the dipped bread went immediately out: and it was night.
Jesus took the
third cup of wine after supper, the cup of redemption. He gave thanks and gave it to
them, saying,
Drink all of it; for this is My blood of the new
testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. They all drank of
it.
Behold, the hand of him that betrays Me was with Me on the
table. Truly the Son of Man goes, as it was determined: but woe to that man by whom
He is betrayed!
But truly I say to you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the
vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom.
When they had sung a hymn, they went out into the mount of
Olives.
Jesus said to them, All of you shall be offended because of
Me this night: for it is written, I will strike the
Shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.
But after that I AM
risen, I will go before you into Galilee.
But Peter said to Him, Although all shall be offended, yet will I not.
Truly I say to you, that this day, even in this night, before the cock crows
twice, you shall deny Me three times.
But he spoke more vehemently If I should die with You, I will not deny You in any way.
Likewise also said they all.
Then Jesus came with them to the mount of Olives; to a
place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, Sit here, while I go
and pray yonder. Pray that you enter not into tempation.
When Jesus had
spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the brook Cedron, where there
was a garden, into it He entered with His disciples.
He too with Him Peter and the
two sons of Zebedee, James and John, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then
He said to them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death: stay
here and watch with Me. He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw,
and kneeled down to pray.
Abba Father, all things are possible to
You; if You be willing, remove this cup from Me: take away this cup from Me:
nevertheless, O My Father, not what I will, but what You will be done.
There
appeared an angel to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. Being in agony He prayed
more earnestly: and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the
ground. When He arose from prayer, He came to His disciples. He found them sleeping,
and said to them,
Why do you sleep? What, could you not watch
with Me for one hour? Rise and pray, less you enter into temptation: the spirit indeed is
willing, but the flesh is weak. Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is
betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that does
betray Me.
Judas also knew the place: for Jesus oftentimes resorted there
with His disciples. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon Him, went
forth and said, Whom do you seek?
They answered Him,
Jesus of Nazareth.
I am
He.
Judas also stood with them. As soon as He said "I am He", they went
backward and fell to the ground. Then He asked again, Whom do you
seek?
Jesus of Nazareth.
I told you I am He: are you come out as against a thief, with swords and
clubs to take Me? I was daily with you in the Temple teaching, and you took Me not: but
this is your hour, and the power of darkness. If therefore you seek Me, let these others go
their way: that the saying might be fulfilled,Of them
which You gave Me I have lost none.
He that betrayed
Him had given them a token, saying,Whoever I shall kiss, the same
is He; take Him, hold Him fast, and lead Him away safely.
As soon as he
drew near, he went to Jesus and said, Hail, Master. He
kissed Him.
Friend, why have you come? Judas, do you betray
the Son of Man with a kiss?
They laid their hands on Him and took Him
away. When they that were about Him saw what would follow, they said to
Him,
Lord, shall we strike with the sword?
Then
Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and struck a servant of the high priest, and cut off
his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Then Jesus said to Peter,
Put your sword into its sheath: for all they that take up the sword shall perish
with the sword. The cup which My Father has given Me, shall I not drink it? Do you
think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He shall presently give Me more than
twelve thousand angels?
Then He touched the servant's ear and healed him.
Then the band and the
captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound Him, then led Him away to Annas
first; for he was the father-in-law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same
year.
Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled. There followed Him a certain
young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; the young men laid hold on
him, and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.
Then Annas asked Jesus
of His disciples, and of His doctrine. Jesus answered,
I spoke
openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue, and in the Temple, where the Jews
always resort; and in secret I have said nothing. Why do you ask Me? Ask them which
heard Me what I have said to them: behold, they know what I said.
When He
had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with his palm, saying,
Do you answer the high priest so? (for Annas also had been
the high priest). Jesus answered,
If I have spoken evil, bear
witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?
Now Annas sent Him
to Caiaphas the high priest.
Then they took Him into the high priest's house. Now Caiaphas was he which gave counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people, and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.
Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so
did another disciple: that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus
into the palace of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door without. Then that other
disciple went out, which was known to the high priest, and spoke to the female servant
that kept the door, and brought Peter in.
Then the girl that kept the door said to Peter,
Are you not also one of this man's disciples?
He said,
Woman, I am not. I know Him not.
The servants and
the officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals, for it was cold; and they warmed
themselves. Peter stood with them and warmed himself. Then the cock
crew.
