Return to Homepage I believe the Bible tells us clearly that Christ died on a Wednesday and arose on a Saturday. Using a standard KJV Bible, I have compiled a chronological record of the events from the supper at Bethany to the empty tomb. This is not an all inclusive table of events, but I have included the main points of each day. This webpage is what I believe actually happened. It is taken entirely from the Bible (except a couple of parts added for clarity which do not effect the story). I have also changed the archaic King James to a more readable modern English. The words of the disciples are in purple (because of I Pe 2:9). The words of Christ are in red. All other words that are spoken are in green. So far we have read of His return to Bethany on Nisan 8 and a supper that was given in His honor on Nisan 9. We have read of His journey to Jerusalem on Nisan 10 and His Triumphal Entry into the city. We have read of His cursing of the fig tree on Nisan 11 and the dried up results on Nisan 12, of the parables He spoke against the Pharisees and their plot to kill Him. We read of the preparation for the Passover in the evening of Nisan 13, the Passover meal itself and the agony of Gethsemane into the wee hours of Nisan 14. We read of His arrest and subsequent illegal trials before the Sanhedrin, up to the time they delivered Him to Pilate, and of Peter's three denials. Now we will continue with the rest of the story. I hope you enjoy reading this, and your comments are more than welcomed. You are also invited to visit my other webpage at http://www.bcity.com/graphotech
Christ was crucified on Friday and arose from the tomb on Sunday morning, right? I don't think so.
Then Judas, who had betrayed Him, when he saw that He was condemned, repented of his sin and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.
They said, What is that to us? You see to it.
He cast the pieces of silver into the Temple and departed. Then he went and hanged himself, and falling headlong, he burst apart in the middle, and all his bowels gushed out.
The chief priests took the silver pieces and said, It is not lawful to put them in the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
Then they took council and bought with them the potter's field with the reward of iniquity, to bury strangers in. That is why that field was called Aceldama, that is to say, "The field of blood", to this day. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet,And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him that was valued, when they of the children of Israel did value, and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.
Now the chief priests and elders and all the council sought false witness against Jesus to put Him to death. But found none: though many false witnessees came, yet they found none. For many bare false witness against Him, but their witness did not agree together. At last came two false witnesses who said,
This fellow said, "I am able to destroy the Temple of God that is made with hands, and to build it in three days without hands."
But neither did their witness agree together. Then the high priest arose and said to Him, Do You answer nothing? What is it which these witness against You?
But Jesus held His peace.
Now Peter sat without in the palace: after a little while another servant saw him and said, You are also of them. This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.
Peter said with an oath, Man, I am not. I do not know the man.
Then the high priest answered Jesus, I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.
Jesus answered him, I AM: nevertheless I say to you, hereafter shall you see the son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
Then the high priest tore his clothes, He has spoken blasphemy! What further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard His blasphemy, what do you think?
They answered, He is guilty of death.
Then did they spit in His face. They covered His face and buffeted Him. Others struck Him with the palms of their hands, Prophecy to us, You Christ, who is he that struck You?
Many other things blasphemously they spoke against Him, and the servants struck Him with their hands.
After about the space of one hour, another confidently said, Of a truth this fellow also was with Him. Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you. For you are a Galilean.
Then Peter began to curse and swear, Man, I know not what you say! I know not the man.
Immediately, while he yet spoke, the cock crew the second time. The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the words of the Lord, how He said to him, "Before the cock crows twice, you shall deny Me three times.". Peter went out and wept bitterly.
When the morning had come, all the chief priests and elders of the people came together, and led Him into their council and took council against Jesus to put Him to death: and they asked Him, Are You the Christ? Tell us.
If I tell you, you will not believe: and if I also ask you, you will not answer Me. Nor let Me go. Hereafter shall the Son of Man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
Are You then the Son of God?
You say I am.
What need we of any further witnesses? For we ourselves have heard of His own mouth.
Then when they had bound Him, they led Him away from Caiaphas to the hall of Judgment, and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor. It was early and they themselves went not into the Judgment hall, less they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.
Pilate then went out to them, What accusation do you bring against this man?
They answered, If He were not a malefactor, we would not have brought Him up to you.
Then Pilate said, Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law.
The Jews answered It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ a king.
Then Pilate entered the Judgment hall again and Jesus stood before the governor. Are You the King of the Jews?
Jesus answered, Do you say this thing of yourself, or did others tell it to you of Me?
Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me: what have You done? Do You answer nothing? Do You not hear how many things they witness against You?
My kingdom is not of this world: if My kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews. But now is My kingdom not from here.
Are You then a king?
You say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause I came into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears My voice.
What is truth?
Then when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and Pilate said to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
They were the more fierce, saying, He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
When Pilate heard that He was from Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilean. As soon as he knew that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
When Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad: for he was desirous to see Him of a long season, because he had heard many things of Him and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by Him. Then he questioned with Him in many words, but He answered him nothing. The chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. Herod with his men of war set Him as nothing, they mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him again to Pilate. The same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for they were enimies before.
Now at the Feast the governor was in the habit of releasing to the people one prisoner, whomever they would. They had then a notable prisoner called Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection. The multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done for them.
When he was sat down on the Judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, Have nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of Him.
Therefore, when they were gathered together, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, Pilate said, You have brought this man to me, as one that perverts the people. Behold, having examined Him before you, I have found no fault in this man; nothing worthy of death is done to Him. But you have a custom, that I should release to you one at the Passover. I will therefore chastise Him and release Him.
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. They cried out all at once, Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas.
Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spoke again to them, Whom will you that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? (For he knew that for envy they had delivered Him). Will you that I release to you the king of the Jews?
They said, Barabbas.
Pilate said, Why, what evil has He done? What shall I do then with Jesus?
But they cried all the more, Let Him be crucified.
Crucify Him.
Crucify Him.
When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but rather a tumult was made, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see to it yourselves.
They answered, His blood is on us, and on our children.
Then Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas to them. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, called Praetorium, and gathered to Him the whole band of soldiers. They stripped Him, and put on Him a scarlet robe. Then the soldiers braided a crown of thorns and put it on His head and placed a reed in His right hand: they bowed the knee before Him, and mocked Him, Hail, king of the Jews!
They spit upon Him and took the reed and struck Him on the head, and they struck Him with their hands.
Pilate therefore went forth and said to the people, Behold, I bring Him forth to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him.
Then Jesus came forth wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, Behold the man!
When the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, Crucify Him, curcify Him.
Pilate said to them, Take Him and crucify Him: for I find no fault in Him.
The Jews answered, We have a law, and by our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.
When Pilate heard this, he was the more afraid and went back into the Judgment hall to Jesus.Where are You from? But Jesus gave no answer.
Then Pilate said, Do You not speak to me? Do You not know that I have the power to crucify You, and I have the power to release You?
Jesus answered, You could have no power at all against Me, except it were given you from above: therefore he that delivered Me to you has the greater sin.
From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend: whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.
When Pilate heard that, he brought Jesus forth and sat down in the Judgment seat in the palace that is called the Pavement, but in Hebrew Gabbatha. It was the preparation of the Passover, and he said to the Jews, Behold, your king!
But they cried, Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him.
Pilate asked them, Shall I crucify your king?
The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. After that they had mocked Him, they took the robe off from Him and put His garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene coming out of the country, Simon by name, the father of Alexander and Rufus. Him they compelled to bear His cross. There were also two other malefactors led with Him to be put to death. When they were come to a place called Golgotha, which is interpreted "a place of a skull", there they crucified Him, and the malefactors, one on the right side of Him and one on the left side. It was the third hour. They gave Him vinegar to drink mingled with myrrh: and when He has tasted thereof, He would not drink.
Then Jesus said, .Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
They parted His garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet,
They parted My garments among them, and upon My vesture did they cast lots.
Sitting down they watched Him there, and set up over His head His accusation written,
THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land to the ninth hour. The sun was darkened. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said, Woman, behold your son! Then to the disciple, Behold your mother!
From that hour that disciple took her into his own home.
About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani (My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?)
After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thurst.
Some of them that stood there, when they heard this said, This man calls for Elijah.
Straightway one of them ran, took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, then put it on a reed and gave it to Him to drink.
The rest said, Let Him be, let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him.
Jesus cried again with a loud vioce, It is finished: Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit. Having said this, He gave up the spirit.
Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, (for that Sabbath was a high day), besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other which was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they broke not His legs. But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and there came out blood and water.
For these things were done that the scripture should be fulfilled,
A bone of Him shall not be broken. They shall look upon Him whom they have pierced.
Behold, the veil of the Temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom, and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent. All the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, struck their breasts and returned. All His aquaintances and the women that followed Him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
When it was evening, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph. An honorable counsellor who also was a disciple of Jesus. He went in boldly to Pilate and begged for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate marvelled that He was already dead and calling to the centurion, he asked him whether He had been dead long. When he knew it of the centurion, he commanded the body to be delivered to Joseph.
There also came Nicodemus, which had first come to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds in weight. Then they took the body of Jesus and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. Then they rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre and departed.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses and the women which came with Him from Galilee, followed after and beheld where He was laid. That day was the preparation, and the Sabbath drew on.
Now the next day that followed the day of preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate,
Sir, we remember that that deceiver said while He was yet alive, "After three days I will rise again". Command therefore that the sepulchre be made secure until the third day, less His disciples come by night and steal Him away, then say to the people, "He is risen from the dead!"; so the last error shall be worse than the first.
Pilate said, You have a watch: go your way, make it as secure as you can.
So they went and made the sepulchre secure, sealing the stone and setting a watch over it.
When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, went and bought sweet spices, that they might come and annoint Him. They returned and prepared the spices and ointments, then rested on the Sabbath day according to the commandment.
The graves were opened and many bodies of the saints which slept arose and came out of the graves after His resurrection and went into the Holy City and appeared to many.
In the end of the Sabbath, very early in the morning as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the sepulchre at the rising of the sun, bringing the spices which they had prepared. They said to themselves, Who will roll away the stone from the door of the sepulchre for us?
Behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door, then sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: For fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. The angel answered the women, Fear not: for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for He is risen, as He said. Come. See the place where the Lord lay.
They entered in, and when they looked, they found not the body of the Lord Jesus. But they saw a young man sitting on the right side. He was clothed in a long white garment, and they were frightened. He said to them, Be not afraid. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified. Why seek the living among the dead? He is risen. Behold the place where they laid Him. Remember how He spoke to you when He was yet in Galilee. The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Then they remembered His words.
Go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead: behold, He goes before you into Galilee, there shall you see Him. Lo, I have told you.
They departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy. Neither said they anything to any man, for they were afraid.
He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven devils. She went and told them that had been with Him as they morned and wept. When they had heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it.
Now when the women were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city and showed the chief priests all the things that were done. When they were assembled with the elders and had taken counsel, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying,
Say to those how ask, "His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we slept". If this comes to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.
So they took the money and did as they were taught, and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. When they saw Him, they worshipped Him: but some doubted. Then Jesus spoke to them,
All power is given to Me in heaven and in earth. Go therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you. Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world.
