Why Will the Summer Day Delay

written by Joan

The Rum Tum Tugger was lounging about as usual on a bright sunny summer morning, when a beautiful stranger entered the junkyard. Tugger took immediate notice of the new queen, but observed that, so had the other males in the area. "Greetings," said Munkustrap. "Welcome to the junkyard. Can I help you with anything miss?" The stranger looked at Munku. "Yes, I am not from around here, and I was looking for a new home." Munku grinned. "you are welcome to stay here for a little while." During the time they had been talking the Tugger had come down from his perch and joined the large group of cats that had surrounded the stranger. Tugger noticed that the stranger had beautiful silver fur and gorgeous sea green eyes. It seemed to him, that when she smiled, the sun shone even brighter. Tugger shook his head. What is happening to me? No queen has ever made me feel like THIS. "...Tugger? TUGGER!!!" Shouted Munku. "I asked you a question. Would you be willing to show our guest around?" Munku noticed Tugger's distracted look. "What are you thinking of brother?" Tugger shook his head again. "I was just thinking how beautiful our guest is." Tugger said with a charming grin. "I would be honored to show this vision around." As Tugger showed the new queen around, he felt stranger and stranger. "Ummm...there is a um celebration tonight, and I would be delighted if you would join me." The stranger smiled at Tugger. "I would be very happy to accompany such a handsome tom to this, celebration." Tugger noticed the odd feeling of butterflies in his stomach, and smiled.

That evening at the celebration Tugger introduced the queen to the other cats that she hadn't met earlier in the day. "...And this is my good friend Mistoffolees." "It is my great honor to meet you lady." Purred Misto. "And I am pleased to meet YOU." Said the queen. At this remark, Misto looked like he was about to float away. Tugger laughed. "You seem to be popular with the other toms here." He said. "It appears so." Said the mysterious queen. "You yourself seem popular with the other queens." Tugger just smiled. "I only want the one that is with me." He purred. Suddenly the lights flashed, and there stood Macavity. "MACAVITY!" Screamed Bombalurina. "Run for it!!!!!" Macavity glared around. "Relax, I only came to get what is rightfully mine." He thundred. "Return to me the silver queen!" The stranger cowered behind Tugger. "Don't let him take me! For Heavyside's sake, don't let him take me!" Tugger looked at the fear on the beautiful queens face. "I won't let him have you!" He looked up at Macavity. "You'll have to go through me to get her!" Challenged the Tugger. "If it's a fight you want foolish one, it is a fight you will have!" Macavity boomed. Macavity leaped on Tugger and tore into his shoulder. Tugger yowled and threw Macavity to the ground. The ragged bandit leaped again at the Tugger, but tugger swiped at Macavity's stomach with claws unsheathed. Macavity screamed in pain as Tuggers claws dug into his stomach. Macavity whirled around and gashed open Tuggers shoulder. Tugger reeled in pain, but managed to kick Macavity in the throat. Macavity saw that he was loosing the fight and noticed that the silver female he sought was unguarded. He grabbed a piece of jagged metal and screamed, "If I can't have her, then no tom can!" Too late the Tugger noticed Macavity's plan. "NO!" He shouted just as Macavity cut deep into the female's side. Tugger lunged at Macavity, but The Ginger tom had already dissapeared.Tugger, battered and bleeding ran to his one love, and cradled her in his arms. She looked at him with pain filled eyes. "I'm sorry." She said. "Don't be," said Tugger. "I couln't protect you. My dear, I tried, I really did." "I know you did. It's not your fault. I'm glad that I was shown love before I died. I thank you for that." "You won't die." Reasoned Tugger. "You'll live. Misto will heal you!" "Even Misto can't help me. Goodbye love." "Wait! I never even knew who you were! Where your from, your parents names. Don't leave me yet!" The fading stranger, with her last bit of strength, leaned up and kissed Tugger. Then she said to him. "I am the daughter of Grizzabella" She said with a weak voice. "and I will always love you." Those were her last words before she joined her mother. Tugger just sat, cradeling the body of his one true love.
