2005 COACHING STAFF AND ASSISTANTS

HEAD COACH: Greg Mance (Virginia Tech)
Coach Mance is a graduate of Giles HS where he excelled as a quarterback and defensive back. A graduate of Virginia Tech’s baseball program, Coach Mance has been an assistant coach, offensive coordinator and head coach at the 8th grade, JV and Varsity levels. He has been Varsity head coach since 1997.
ASSISTANT COACHES
Jeff Tarter
After graduating from Tazewell HS and Bluefield State, Coach Tarter started his football coaching career under RHS Head Coach Bruce Evans in 1984. Since then he has coached a variety of sports including basketball, tennis and baseball. Coach Mance recruited him away from those sports in 1997. Coach Tarter handles the wide receivers and inside linebackers.
Dennis Palmer
Coach Palmer was a standout running back for the BLUES in the '70s. He has coached the BLUES at all levels; 8th grade, JV and Varsity. Coach Palmer coaches the running backs and outside linebackers and plays an active role in the off season conditioning/strength program.
Brad Strong
Coach Strong is a graduate of Tazewell HS and Ferrum College, TN. He was the Assistant Football Coach for 14 years in Tazewell prior to joining the BLUES staff in 2004. He is the position coach for the runningbacks and free safeties. Coach Strong has also coached volleyball and women’s basketball. Coach Strong teaches PE/Health and is the Head Baseball coach in the spring.
Michael Davis
Coach Michael Davis played varsity football at Hurley High School and received his Bachelors Degree from Clinch Valley College in Wise. Coach Davis coaches the offensive and defensive lineman. He is currently a special education instructor at RMS.
Chris Altizer
Coach Altizer has assisted with the 8th Grade Team's offense for the last 4 years. He is a graduate of Bluefield College specializing in Physical Education. He currently teaches at Cedar Bluff Elementary.
Terry Wess
Coach Wess has worn many hats for the RHS football program. After three years as a star QB for the BLUES, Coach Wess attracted a lot of attention from high level programs like Marshall. Coach Wess has been trainer(he is a Physical Therapy Assistant), assistant coach and Head Coach for the BLUES (1993 with a 7-3 record) since his return to Richlands. Coach Wess will coach the defensive ends and tight ends.
Frank Daugherty
Coach Daugherty is the former Head Coach at Twin Springs. This is his first year on Coach Mance's staff. Coach Daugherty is the head coach and offensive coordinator of the JV squad. He currently teaches 10th grade PE and Health.
Mike Henry
First year on Coach Mance's staff. Coaches the JV squad and serves as their defensive coordinator. A former player at Graham HS and graduate of Bluefield State, Coach Henry teaches Special Education at RHS.
Ronnie Davis
After a 4 year hiatis, Coach Davis returns to Coach Mance's staff. A graduate of RHS and Bluefield College, Coach Davis assists with the varsity squad. This is his 6th season of assisting during Coach Mance's tenure.
