Bert Carolan has kindly submitted these reports from the very early days of the clubs existence.
Moy Villa 3 Crossmolina 2
Man Utd Cup
My first competitive game with the club and one which we were unlucky to
lose. We took thel lead just after half time when Gerard O'Boyle got on the end
of a through ball and finished well. He hit the post shortly after and I had a
shot cleared off the line and it was in this period that we should have sealed
the game. Moy Villa came back and were awarded a penalty which they converted.
One all at full time.Moy Villa took the lead in extra time after Aiden Doyle
made a mistake at centre half. We equalised when John Hegarty made a great run
up the right and crossed for Adrian Conway to finish. Moy Villa took the lead
again after one of their forwards was blatantly offsides in front of the keeper.
With about two minutes left Adrian was flattened in front of goal but no penalty
was awarded. The fact that the official referee didn't show up meant that Pat
McKeon of Enniscrone handled the game and this had a bearing on the result. Some
wild tackles from both sides were seen. Nevertheless a good game for us and I
was particularly impressed with Jhn Hegarty and Anthony Connor in the defence
and Joe Keane and Adrian Conway in attack.

Crossmolina 8 Roundfort 1
League match
If I was worried about what we would do without the Gaelic players I
shouldn't have. The fact that Roundfort were the most disorganised team I had
ever encountered meant that the game was over at half time. They looked the part
with sponsored Fiorentina strip but were a shambles. Adrian Conway and Gerard
O'Boyle both scored from close in before Joe Keane took on and beat a ddefender
before crashing in a shot from 20 yards. In the second half we switched players
around. Gerard got another three goals and Adrian two. They scored a consolation
penalty at 5-0. They must have fouled every throw they took although a couple of
our own lads aren't too hot at that and it's something to work on in training. I
was impressed by Anthony Connor at centre half, Mark Loftus at left back and
somewhat surprisingly John Gallagher at right of midfield. However Man of the
Match had to be Joe Keane.

Killala 1 Crossmolina 6
Challenge match
A game initiated by Peter McDonnell, Killala manager and one which saw the
end of our erstwhile manager Liam Cawley. Due to his apathy we arrived in
Killala both late and with the bare eleven players. However three of those were
Gaelic players and their presence was significant. Killala didn't have their
full team but had probably the best team they could have had on the day. We took
a little while to settle but when we did the passing and control of Noel Convey,
Joe Keane, Paul McGuinness and Adrian left Killala trying to catch smoke. Two
goals from Noel and one from Adrian saw us three up at half time with Paul
Flaherty in goal rarely tested. Convey completed his hat trick in the second
half and Paul McGuinness volleyed the best goal of the game before David
Alexander converted a token penalty for Killala. Gerard O'Boyle completed the
rout towards the end and I felt a certain amount of sympathy for my old
colleagues but basically I was delighte. I am a little concerned about how we
are going to cope without the Gaelic guys and John Hegarty.
Team - Paul Flaherty, Ciaran Connor, Donal McDonald, John Hegarty, Noel Convey,
Paul McGuinness, Bert Carolan, Adrian Conway, Joe Keane, Gerard O'Boyle

Newport 1 Crossmolina 2
Robert Kilkelly Cup
Though in the middle of a punishing fixture schedule Newport would have
expected to get past Crossmolina at Fahy on Tuesday. However Crossmolina were
never coming to make up the numbers and with Barry Heffernan in goal they could
always feel they had a chance. Donal McDonald and Anthony Connor began to warm
to their defensive responsibilities and with this solid foundation at the back
Crossmolina set about the win. Adrian Conway hit the bar from a corner just
before Eugene O'Donnell's shot was superbly saved by Heffernan. Crossmolina
scored at the end of the first half. Gerard O'Boyle perceptive through ball was
picked up by Adrian Conway and slammed to the net. Through sheer weight of
numbers Newport equalised early in the second half with the ball being forced
home from close range. The Division One side enjoyed a lot of possession but
Crossmolina had the clear cut chances. Bert Carolan thumped a free kick off the
bar and Gerard O'Boyle skimmed a post less than three minutes remained when
O'Boyle set up Shane Colohan. The substitute controlled the ball, settled
himself and slipped the ball to the far corner. Not enough time for Newport to
reply, they were dejected at the end.The Reserve League team were understandably
elated having won through for a crack at Castlebar United. Crossmolina's defence
was excellent while Aiden Doyle had his best game.
Conn Rangers 1 Crossmolina 6
To paraphrase Judy Garland "I'm not in Killala now Toto". If we'd
lost our best centre half and our top scorer in Killala all hell would have
broken loose. In Crossmolina? Two players just as good (better?) replace them.
Gerard O'Boyle was working so into the side came Dennis McCalmont, a Derryman
with pace and a vicious shot in either foot and loads of experience. For Aiden
Doyle came John Hegarty (Fig) having got fed up with Hollister. Rangers were a
varied assortment of characters and beer-bellies. The boys knew one of their
number, a certain Ray Gaughan and indeed the ref told me he was their best
player. Davis tackled him early on and his interest in the game evaporated. Paul
opened the scoring when he finished a wild clearance.Adrian scored the next
after Joe tore up the left and I sort of set Conway up. A few minutes later I
deliberately set up Dennis and he hammered a shot in at the near post. We gave
away a stupid goal just before half time, getting caught out on an offside.
After half time we really took the game to them but had to wait a while to
score. I missed a penalty after Dennis was pulled down but the same man was
flattened again and this time Mark Loftus scored the kick. Paul Flaherty scored
the best goal of the game from 30 yards and Adrian finished a corner to complete
the scoring.

Mark Loftus, Bert Carolan(Mick Gaughan), Anthony Connor, Joe Keane, Paul
Flaherty, Adrian Conway, Dennis McCalmont.
Killala 0 Crossmolina 3
League match
We arrived later for this game due to transport problems. Killala were a
little under strength being without Kenny Golden and Johnny Cuffe (who had
scored a hat trick the week before) but had David Munnelly and Speedy in their
place. We had lost Ciaran Connor with a knee injury at training and further
disaster struck when Aiden Doyle badly twisted his knee after 15 minutes.
Luckily Donal McDonald had come and he played solidly at centre half with John
Davis coming in at right back. Adrian scored early on for us but despite a
number of god chances could not finish the game until abut 15 minutes from the
end when joe Keane scored a great header from a corner. Gerard was taken down
for a penalty which John Gallagher converted. A good enough performance under
the circumstances. The lads may have been a little surprised by Killala's
physical (though never dirty) attitude and the lack of space thought they coped
well enough. Although Killala had a lot of possession Matt only had one real
save to make. Aiden Doyle will be a big loss.
Team - Matt Gilvarry, Donal McDonald, Aiden Doyle(John Davis), Anthony Connor,
Mark Loftus, John Gallagher, Joe Keane, Bert Carolan, Paul Flaherty, Gerard
O'Boyle, Adrian Conway
Subs - Derek Greham, Dominic Gilvarry
Snugboro 2 Crossmolina 5
Mark Loftus and Joe Keane were missing for this game and we certainly missed
Joe at midfield. Snugboro were a big side, good in the air but with a dreadful
final ball. We experimented with John Gallagher and Dennis McCalmont in midfield
but that didn't really work. Dennis was too fond of goal and John didn't have
the experience to make any kind of a job on his own. Mind you he did score the
first goal, a tap in after some good work by Adrian Conway. Adrian himself got
the second, a goal that left everyone who saw it in a daze. Anthony Connor got
the ball at left back , dodged round a couple of players and passed to Paul
Flaherty. He laid it off first time to Adrian who made some kind of move with
his feet that completely wrong footed the defence and beat the keeper to his far
post. Gerard O'Boyle did some good work to set up Dennis for a tap in. In the
second half a cross by Paul was caught by the wind and flew in. Gerard O'Boyle
tapped in the fifth after the keeper failed to hold a fierce Paul Flaherty shot.
We lost our way towards the end and gave away a couple of goals. The first was a
penalty and the second a close range finish after a mix up by our centre halves.
Some of the lads were unhappy with the game but five goals and two points will
do me.
Team - Matt Gilvarry, Donal McDonald, John Hegarty, John Davis, Anthony Connor,
Dennis McCalmont, Rory Connor, John Gallagher, Bert Carolan, Paul Flaherty,
Gerard O'Boyle, Adrian Conway

Crossmolina 1 Knock United 0
This was always going to be a crunch game as Knock's results were as
impressive as our own. They were a big, competitive team and very committed. We
took a while to to settle and the way they were hitting their wide players I
thought we might be in real trouble. However once Joe Keane got going in the
middle we took control. The goal was a beauty John Hegarty took a free outside
his area to Joe who clipped it to Adrian. His lay off dropped perfectly for
Dennis to volley in from 25 yards. Adrian went over on his ankle and slowed up a
bit. He missed two chances having gone round the keeper when he delayed his
shot. Matt Gilvarry saved our bacon in the second half when he came out on a
forward who was clean through. That was the only real chance Knock had. Our
defence really showed their worth under pressure although Knock maintained they
were missing a couple of forwards. Matt Gilvarry went to England the day after
this game.

Paul Flaherty, Joe keane, Paul McGuinness, Gerard O'Boyle(John Davis), Adrian
Conway(Noel Garrett), Dennis McCalmont
Roundfort - Crossmolina
This match was played in truly atrocious conditions on a pitch the size of a
postage stamp. Roundfort had improved a lot and had a couple of Gaelic players.
They caused us a couple of problems early on despite Adrian giving us an early
lead. Anthony Connor got his first for the club with a great first time shot
from a corner. Dennis sealed the game just before half time. Shane Colohan came
on for the second half and finished off a Paul Flaherty corner from about two
yards. Paul himself scored directly from a corner shortly after using the wind
and a careless keeper well. Roundfort made a bit of a comeback and scored two
goals, the second of which was a farce with John Hegarty passing the ball back
to the forward. They had another chance just after with our full backs both out
of position and I got a bit annoyed to say the least. But Dennis got a sixth
after a great pass by Anthony Connor.
Team - Dominic Gilvarry, John Davis(Shane Colohan), John Hegarty, Donal
McDonald, Mark Loftus, Anthony Connor, Bert Carolan, Paul Flaherty, Gerard
O'Boyle, Adrian Conway (Gary Greham), Dennis McCalmont
Crossmolina 3 Killala 1
The word was that Killala were putting together their strongest team of the
campaign. Sean McHale for goal and Sean Walsh for centre half were mentioned.
Basil did play but in truth he would have been better off staying at home.
Adrian was injured and Gerard O'Boyle had the flu so Dennis played with Paul
McGuinness up front. Killala settled quicker and Brendan Farrell scored a great
goal from outside the box. This was the first time we had been behind so I was
curious to see how we would respond. Killala's physical approach made it doubly
interesting. The answer was emphatic. The more Killala tried to knock us off our
game the more soccer we played. Wave upon wave of attacks crashed on Killala's
goal. Dennis, Joe, the two Pauls and Figgy all missed good chances before Dennis
finally equalised after good work by Mark Loftus. We didn't have as many chances
in the second half but we converted two. Dennis finished well after a good break
by Joe and he completed his hat trick when I crossed from the right. So much for
Killala. The only quibble I had was that we could have scored more. Dennis is
improving with every game and Paul McGuinness, while very unorthodox, is
nevertheless very effective. I'm still puzzled as to his best position. It may
be just behind the front two. This will mean re-arranging the team. Whether we
will do that remains to be seen.
