Renmore 5-2 Crossmolina Crossmolina’s season was clinically ended by an impressive
5-2 Renmore victory at freezing
Abbeytown on Sunday. The Galway side overcame a 5th minute own goal by Noel Greaney to coast into the next round of the Connacht Cup. Greaney had poked the ball past his brother in goal from near midfield as he felt pressure being applied by Derek Greham. John Howley crossed from the left wing in the 18th minute and Alan Corcoran equalised from 4 yards out. Ten minutes before the half Padraig Whittaker finished off a mazy left wing dribble with a fine finish to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. The lead was shortlived as Renmore drew level 5
minutes later after a Flaherty foul on Willie Carr earned the visitors a free
kick on the right wing. Dead ball expert Jimmy Nolan swung in a typically
dangerous ball and Greaney turned from goat to hero by heading in from 6
yards out. As the half ended Nolan delivered another stinging cross from a
left wing corner and Greaney headed back across goal to allow his striker to
bundle it in for the lead. It proved to be the turning point in the game as
the Galwegians dominated the second half and rolled to a comfortable victory.
Kevin Carr settled the tie by guiding in a left wing cross in the 57th
minute as Renmore went 42 ahead. The best was saved for last though when
Jimmy Nolan blasted an unstoppable 25 yard shot which thundered in off the
underside of the crossbar to seal Renmore’s path to the next round. The match
signalled the end of the Bert Carolan era at Crossmolina, which was
essentially their entire existence. |
