Crafts from past weeks

We have listed crafts that were posted from previous weeks below:

Week of August 10, 1998
Supply Box

We used a cigar box, but an oatmeal can with a lid would work great also. Decorate the can or box as the child likes. We put Home Sweet Homeschool on the outside of ours. Fill the can with crayons, scissors, stickers, and other supplies.

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • 1/2 cup liquid starch
  • 2 cups salt

Mix all the ingredients together and paint a picture. The pictures will sparkle when they are dry.

This is a great craft!!! The children can make fun shapes and when they are finished they can eat their designs. We hope you enjoy this.

PEANUT BUTTER PLAYDOUGH

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 cup powdered milk

CIRCLE CATERPILLARS

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • construction paper
  • scissors
  • crayons or markers
  • glue
Trace circles on different colored construction paper. Have older students cut them out. Glue them onto a background piece of construction paper in a side-by-side fashion. Now you have a caterpillar. Draw a face, legs, or whatever would give your caterpillar a cute personality.

Week of May 11th, 1998
Last week we made flowers from pasta. This week we are making necklaces and bracelets.

PASTA NECKLACE

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • macaroni
  • string or yarn
  • food coloring
  • water
  • jar
Mix the desired color of food coloring in a jar with water. Add the macaroni and soak to the desired color. Dry the macaroni and string it on the yarn and tie the yarn. The kids will love wearing their new jewelry. Our kids enjoy playing dress up and these necklaces and bracelets make nice accessories. *smile*

Week of May 4th, 1998
We have had the best time making different flower crafts during the past couple of weeks. We have made a bulletin board of sorts on our pantry door and entitled it, "God made the flowers." The kids have really enjoyed these crafts.

PASTA FLOWERS

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • macaroni
  • glue
  • food coloring
  • construction paper
  • water
  • jar
  • markers
Mix the desired color of food coloring in a jar with water. Add the macaroni and soak to the desired color. Dry the macaroni and glue onto a piece of construction paper to make a flower. Draw in the leaves, stems, grass, sun, etc... to complete the picture.

Week of April 27, 1998
FLOWERS MADE FROM BAKING CUPS

When I taught public school, these were a big hit with the children.

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • scissors
  • glue
  • baking cups
  • construction paper
  • straw
  • stapler or tape
  • markers
  • glitter
There are two different ways we will be making these flowers.

The first way will be to glue the baking cups to construction paper and draw a stem and leaves under the baking cup. We can then decorate the construction paper with an outdoors scene.

The second way will be to decorate the baking cup with markers and glitter. We will then staple the baking cup onto a straw and cut out leaves to staple on the straw also.

Week of April 20, 1998
Black-Eyed Susan Flowers

This is one of the crafts we are working on this week.

We have been working in our yard for the last two weeks getting things ready for spring. It has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to plant things and they are looking forward to seeing them grow. We have started planting our garden. The children planted the seeds in cups in our house during the winter, so they have enjoyed planting their plants that they have cared for the last two months outside. Since we have been doing so much gardening lately, our crafts for the next couple of weeks will be different types of flowers that we can make.

BLACK-EYED SUSAN FLOWERS

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • scissors
  • glue
  • yellow construction paper
  • black or brown construction paper
  • straw
  • stapler or tape
  • green construction paper
Mom will draw a circle on the yellow paper for the older preschoolers to cut out independently. For the younger preschoolers, the circle should be precut. The child can then cut fringe all the way around the yellow circle. When this is completed, cut out a small black or brown circle to be glued in the middle of the yellow circle. Next, tape or staple the flower circles onto the straw. Cut out (or trace for your older preschooler to cut out) leaf shapes. Staple these to the middle area of the straw. This will complete the black-eyed susan flower.

Week of March 23, 1998
AN EASTER CROSS

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • Glitter
  • glue
  • construction paper
  • magic markers
Mom will draw a cross on a piece of construction papers. There will also be the following scripture written on the paper and we will discuss what it means... "The angel said, 'He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.'" Matthew 28:5,6. The children will then color the cross and glitter it.

Week of March 16, 1998
We are so excited! We have been saving toilet paper tubes for months and will be using them now to make a bunny. *smile*

A TUBE BUNNY RABBIT

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • Toilet paper tube
  • glue
  • cotton balls
  • construction paper (light colors for a bunny)
  • magic markers
  • scissors
  • twist ties
First have your children cover the toilet paper tube with the color of choice. Next, cut out shapes for ears. Draw eyes, nose, and a bunny mouth to make a face. Glue twist ties on for whiskers and a cotton ball on for a cotton tail.

Week of March 2, 1998
Since March has now arrived, and the wind blows the clouds quickly past, we are making clouds this week.

CLOUDS

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • white paper
  • blue construction paper
  • glue stick
  • cotton balls
Using the white paper, have your children tear the sheets into different shapes. The torn paper should be in large shapes. The children will then glue the white paper onto the blue paper. To add an additional touch, glue cotton balls onto the white paper finishing off the clouds.

Week of February 23, 1998
We are celebrating our son's third birthday this week, so we are making crafts that relate to this.

Paper Birthday Cake

  • MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • old crayons
  • waxed paper
  • warm iron to be used by Mom or Dad
  • construction paper
  • markers or crayons
  • glitter
  • glue
Grate crayons and separate into different bowls using the colors of your choice. Melt the grated crayons between waxed paper. After the waxed paper has cooled, cut this into the shape of birthday candles.

Using construction paper, cut out a cake shape. Have your children decorate this cake with markers and glitter. Glue the waxed paper candles to the top of the cake.

Display it proudly for the birthday boy or girl.
