SENTENEL MUTE

Barking dogs in frigid night
tied stupidly out of shelter,
forgotten by owners,
ignored by neighbors,
answered only by other dogs
who share their troubles
and howl to disapprove.
QUIET! SHUT UP!
and humans again
are serenely unaware -
all but one,
who listens
and wonders,
staring out icy windows
at gusty, moaning skies
and dares not move.
