HELLSTORM OF EVIL VENGEANCE (2000)
split with Conqueror

Black Witchery has such a raw, yet brutal sound that there really is no comparison. Black Witchery is just, well, Black Witchery. It's no-frills raw black metal with a hint of the brutality of Blasphemy. The songs are all similarly-paced, with almost the same drum fills and rhythm in every track. While that is a drawback, it does kind of work because the drumming sounds so organic that lends an almost underground credence to the songs. The guitarwork is pretty damn impressive. It's fast, sinister-sounding riffs that are lower-tuned than the standard black metal band's (maybe Profanatica is a reference point here?). All in all, I was blown away by this when I first heard it. I expect a certain template when I listen to black metal, and Black Witchery didn't really fit any preconceived notions. The deduction of a star-and-a-half is for the way the drumming can come across as monotonous at times. This release also includes a cover of Blasphemy's "Demoniac"--and a good one at that.

RATING:  3½ out of 5
