BLOOD UPON THE ALTAR (1989)

Taking the all of the primitive elements from old school black metal (like Mayhem's Deathcrush, for example) and incorporating some of the elements of death metal and grindcore, Blasphemy are truly a destructive force. Obsessed with themes like war, hatred, and violence, Blasphemy pound away at a style of black metal which is über-"cult". The whole affair sounds like absolute chaos, with the drums being especially loud and abrasive. The guitars are not the trademark trebly Norwegian style that most people think of when they hear the term "black metal" (that sound would come a few years later), but more of a guttural almost thrash-metal sound. The vocals are at times grunted, at times screamed, at times howled. This music, with perhaps the exception of some of Ildjarn's stuff, is the most vile, putrescent black metal on this earth. In one interview, Blasphemy noted that they wanted to "pound the earth like a demon with a battering ram" with their music. I think they have succeeded.
