CARPATHIAN WOLVES (1994)

Carpathian Wolves is Graveland's first studio album. Now, being that the members of Graveland personally have Nazi/racist tendencies, it should come as no surprise that this is raw, primal, pagan black metal. Granted, the lyrics aren't Nazi/racist (or else these guys wouldn't be on my site), but they are obsessed with the usual anti-Christian/Satanic/evil lyrical themes. Stylistically, I would say that Graveland channels mid-period Bathory (think Hammerheart) by way of early Burzum, Demoncy and even some early Enslaved. Graveland has a tendency to craft long, winding songs that meander over two or three primary riffs/guitar themes, all in the primitive production style of the early 90s Norwegian scene. Fans of all things grim and frostbitten, take note.

RATING:  4 out of 5
