DARK ROMANTICISM (1993)

This was a bit of a disappointment for me. I had heard awesome things about Primordial's recent stuff--that they really stretched the bounds of black metal by incorporating folk and Celtic elements. So I was hoping that this--their first release--would be squarely in the 'black metal' camp but still have a few of those Celtic/folk influences. Nope. It's pretty much straight black metal. And that's not a bad thing...it's just that I was just hoping for some of the Irish-ness of the band to shine through. This is a solid release, consisting of four songs--none of which sound ground-breakingly original. This is a good, quality listen, but don't expect to be blown away. Comparisons to Darkthrone, Immortal's Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism and perhaps even Burzum's Det Som Engang Var are what came to mind for me.

RATING:  3 out of 5
