Brother Lewis Douglas Delano was born in Warsaw, Richmond County, Virginia on August 31, 1914, the eldest of two sons of George Milton and Maude Douglas Delano. He was educated in the public schools of Warsaw as well as the University of Richmond, Evening School of Business.

Brother Delano was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on September 24, 1948, in Richmond Randolph Lodge No. 19. He served as Worshipful Master in 1955. He was District Deputy Grand Master of 15-B Masonic District in 1960. He was elected Grand Junior Deacon in 1971 and served as Grand Master of Masons in Virginia in 1976. Most Worshipful Delano served as Grand Treasurer of the Grand Lodge of Virginia from 1983 – 1992, after which he was elected Grand Treasurer, Emeritus.

Most Worshipful Brother Delano was a charter member and Past Master of Archer Bailey Gay Lodge No. 275, Past Master of Virginia Research Lodge No. 1777, Past Master and Honorary Member of Henrico Union Lodge No. 130, Honorary Member of Melrose Lodge No. 139 and Sandston Lodge No. 216. He was a member of the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, as President of the Scottish Rite Council of Virginia in 1975 – 1976 and as Venerable Master of the Richmond Lodge of Perfection in 1967 – 1968. He was invested with the Rank and Decoration of Knight Commander Court of Honour in 1961 and coroneted 33º, Inspector General Honorary, in 1967. He served as the Deputy to the Supreme Council of the Southern Jurisdiction in 1981 – 1983.

He was member of the Temple Royal Arch Chapter No. 32, Royal Arch Masons; Richmond Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar; and Acca Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Richmond. He served as Potentate in 1967, as Past Commander of the Legion of Honor in 1957, Trustee for five years and Chairman of the Board on the fifth year. He was a member of the Past Masters and Sphinx Clubs and an Honorary Life Member of the Danville, Waynesboro, Staunton and Rappatomac Shrine Clubs. He was a member of the Saint Polycarp Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine; George Potts Council No. 73, Allied Masonic Degrees; the Virginia College Societas Rosicrucians; Richmond Court No. 16 Royal Order of Jesters; Battlefield Forest No. 170, Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

He received many honors. He was the first recipient of the John Blair Medal in 1969 and received the George Washington Distinguished Service Medal in 1982. He was appointed Chairman of the Grand Lodge Bicentennial Anniversary Committee in 1971. He was a Grand Lodge Representative to the Grand Lodge of Delaware.
