From
the time he was raised in Taylor Lodge No. 23 in Roanoke, Virginia, on April
8, 1921, Brother Charles E. “Ted” Webber served his community, country, and
Craft with an excellence beyond compare. This fact was recognized by many,
many honors conferred on him during his long, productive life, and it was
confirmed after his passing on April 13, 1990, by the respectful presence of
America’s foremost Masons at Brother Webber’s funeral and interment in
Roanoke, Virginia, on April 16. Grand
Commander C. Fred Kleinknecht, representing the Scottish Rite, Southern
Jurisdiction, and Ill. David Kruger, Grand Secretary General and S.G.I.G. in
Virginia, representing Virginia’s Brethren, paid their final tribute to this
great man and Mason, saluting him for so many years of service to our Rite as
Sovereign Grand Inspector General in Virginia, 1959-81; Grand Treasurer
General, 1963-75; and Lt. Grand Commander 1975-81. In fact, Brother Webber
was so revered by the Brethren that in 1985 the Roanoke Scottish Rite Temple
was named in his honor. Grand
Master in Virginia in 1948, Brother Webber was very active in all the
branches of Freemasonry including DeMolay, receiving the DeMolay Legion of
Honor, and the Shrine, serving as Potentate, Kazim Temple. A
pharmacist by profession, Brother Webber was also on the board of directors
of the Farmers National Bank and very active in a wide variety of community
and church programs. Illustrious Charles Edward Webber – Freemason,
Virginian, and American – will be long remembered as a business leader, city
father, staunch advocate of public education and committed patriot. |
