The Georgia State Line

The Georgia State Line was a unique army. It was raised by the governor of Georgia, Joseph Brown, on the framework of the already established railroad bridge guard. Governor Brown realized a need for the railroad guard after Andrews' Raid on the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Andrews raid resulted in what is known as "The Great Locomotive Chase".

The Georgia State Line, unlike the Militia and Reserves, was a full time army unit. It was not unlike the Provisional Army of the Confederacy in that respect. However, the State Line was under the direct command of Governor Joseph Brown.

Soldiers in the Georgia State Line served ALMOST entirely within the state of Georgia. They were garrisoned at Savannah, guarded Georgia's Railroads, and joined the Army of Tennessee to fight the battles in Northern Georgia.
