We just added a new baby to our household. This one is adopted but getting along nicely with the other children. We have had some problems with his eating habits, strong vocal outbursts and failure to recognize personal space. We are planning ways to curb these problems.

He tends to stick a foot in his plate and drag it to where I am preparing food. This is very hard to ignore and this habit must be broken immediately. It is unsanitary and extremely annoying.

The tendency for sudden vocal outbursts can startle one so that I drop stuff or jump two feet off the floor. Of course, this outburst sets the other babies off and I have to get all of them to knock it off. You can imagine how many keyboards keys I can hit all at one time when startled. Keyboard then acts like the old style typewriters where you could jam just about all the keys if you hit it just right.

The personal space issue is the most annoying habit. He tends to force his way into the bathroom no matter who is there. He also stands on one's foot and this can cause pain since he is not very small.

I must also work on his butt scratching quirk. If one sits down to perhaps put on one's shoes or read a book, he backs his not small butt into one's lap and insists on getting his butt scratched. Failure to continue this causes him to grab one's hand and place it where it will do him the most good. He also tends to stand with his head laying on my desk when I am at the computer. Occasionally, he lays his head on my keyboard. I am not that good a typist and re-doing what I just typed is frustrating.

So please say hello to Thor, our 140lb Rottweiler. You can leave him a message in my guestbook and I will read it to him. He just joined us at the end of September. A picture of the handsome young man follows.

A very unpleasant update must be entered here. Our beloved gentle giant was diagnosed with bone cancer in November, 2003. Though we only had him for a year, he made an indelible mark on our hearts.

Thor

Along with "Roof" the cat, and Donner and Princess (the little witch Rottweiler), our house has the maximum fur allowance at this time. And I can't step any higher to get over them when moving about the house.

The kids keep me very busy at this time. Three days a week, I take Princess (the witch princess) to doggy daycare. They work on her obedience training and also let her play with all the other daycare kids. By the time she gets home, she's ready to eat and then hit the bed. I can tell if she hasn't played enough because she still demonstrates a desire to bite the boys' ears or chase the poor cat. On the no daycare days, I want to occasionally punch her out since she can be a royal pain. The trouble with that is her head is made of concrete or perhaps some other substance such as marble. I would wind up with a bruised (or almost broken) hand so it's not worth it. And this one is not adopted. I actually chose her. Must have been out of my mind. That's why her legal name is "Witch Princess Carla". It fits quite well.

Pictures of the other kids are located on other pages under the Pets links. Please visit both Roof and Donner's pages to see why they are adopted and how they're doing.
