The cemetery on Whisenant Mountain is located in an isolated area and is off limits except
with special permission and a guide to take you there. It also requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle
to reach it. The site is quite peaceful and calm with wildflowers growing among the stones. One
of the descendants is planning on cleaning the young pine trees from the area this Spring.
I was lucky enough to join direct descendants of John Calloway and Kemmely (Kemley) Whisenant in
visiting the cemetery. We are related through the Starks & Whisenant marriages.
Among the stones, only 4 were readable. The rest were marked with native rocks as was normal in
late 1800's and early 1900's. We were able to read and take pictures of the stones of Kemmely,
William H. and Sarah Ann Whisenant. Another modern grave was there but we did not take photos of
that one. We did not expect to find the grave of Kemmely or John Calloway and were pleased to
find the one for Kemmely. With the limited time available, we were unable to search for the grave
of John Calloway and believe it is probably in Ellijay next to his second wife.
