Hot Track Of The Week:

This is a song currently in the Top 50 that I'll feature each week.

Tommy Richman - Million Dollar Baby

On "Million Dollar Baby," the breakthrough hit by singer and rapper Tommy Richman, the falsetto game is strong...following in the footsteps of Prince and more recently Cee-Lo Green and Childish Gambino on his 2016 hit, "Redbone." The song itself is kind of a mish-mash of a lot of different things, but even through all of that, there's something very catchy about it to me. Against all odds, it may just challenge for the #1 spot in a few short weeks.

Spotlight Song Of The Week:

This is a song from the Next In Line List that may be making a debut sometime within the next few weeks.

Billie Eilish - Birds Of A Feather

There are a lot of things you could say about Billie Eilish. I didn't think one of them would be musical shapeshifter, though. Her earlier material sounds different from her breakthrough period with songs like "Bad Guy" and "Therefore I Am" which sounds different from "Your Power" and "Happier Than Ever." She's headed into new musical territory with the singles from her latest album as well. "Birds Of A Feather," which is the second single from the project, is an uptempo and bouncy love song about staying together and wanting a relationship to never come to an end. Bouncy and breezy is definitely how one should feel when they're in love, so the tempo of the song certainly matches that.

Blast From The Past:

This is a song from the past that I'm featuring to bring back memories of yesteryear!

Wham! - Everything She Wants

This week's Blast From The Past takes us back to 1985. That year, "Everything She Wants" was released as the third U.S. single from Make It Big, the second album release by Brit Pop duo, Wham! It had been released as the fourth single from the album in December 1984 in the U.K. In the U.S., it followed up the smash hits, "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and "Careless Whisper" found George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley writing a song that sounded almost like the plot of a storyline on a soap opera. The song follows a man who feels trapped in a marriage that isn't working. Then the wife announces she's pregnant, which doesn't feel like happy news. Although it had the backing track of what should've seemed like a happy and catchy tune, from a subject matter standpoint it was certainly different from the usually light and superficial Pop fare the duo had put out up to that point. It might also be one of the releases that planted the seeds of a potential solo career in Michael's mind. The album was largely recorded in France with the duo flying in studio musicians from the U.K. to record. Those musicians had all gone back to the U.K., when it came time to record "Everything She Wants" so Michael created the entire song himself. Those closest to him have said that it was around that time that Michael realized he didn't need anyone else's help and could create songs all on his own. Anecdotally, although as his solo career took off he often looked back on the music created during his time with Wham! disdainfully, he said many times over the years that "Everything She Wants" was his favorite Wham! song. Many listeners loved it as well. It peaked at #2 in the U.K. behind the Band-Aid holiday-themed charity song, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" In the U.S., it managed to do a little bit better, climbing all the way to #1, becoming the third #1 in a row there from the album. It also performed well on the U.S. R&B and Dance charts where it got to #12 and #7 respectively and saw Top 10 chart performances in several other countries around the world. In early 1986, the pair would disband and Michael would reemerge a year later in 1987 with a hugely successful solo career. I have to say, though I love a lot of Wham!'s songs, "Everything She Wants" is easily in my Top 2 or 3.
