Command personnel are responsible for starship administration and are the decision makers. The Command Staff is comprised of the CO, XO, Department Chiefs, and designated commissioned and enlisted personnel of the Command Department.

DUTY POSITIONS FOR COMMISSIONED PERSONNEL

CO-Commanding Officer: The CO is responsible for conducting ship’s business, reporting to Starfleet Headquarters, and issuing correspondence to other ships. He or she is the command authority, answering to the Fleet or Region Commander, as well as the Starfleet Chief of Operations. A CO normally holds the rank of Captain. The title of Captain applies to any officer who serves as the CO of a ship, though flag officers who command ships are usually referred to by their rank instead of Captain.

XO-Executive Officer: Number One. The XO is the second command authority. The XO answers to the CO and is responsible for the overall operation of the departments, conducting ship’s business in the absence of the CO, and archives the ship’s records. The XO is the Command Department Chief, and can designate junior Command officers as their assistants should the need arise. The XO commands the ship in the absence of the CO.

C2O-Second Officer: Number Two. The Second Officer is responsible for ship treasury records and financial matters to include collection of dues, reimbursement of expenditures, and publication of financial reports. The Second Officer is a Command assistant as designated by the CO or XO who commands during their absence.

C3O-Third Officer: Number Three. The Third Officer coordinates and arranges special events that involve the ship in the Hampton Roads community, such as conventions, parades, and Virginia Air and Space Center activities. The Third Officer is a Command assistant as designated by the CO and XO, and commands in the absence of the CO, XO, and Second Officer.

CCC-Commandant of the Cadet Corps: The Commandant is responsible for the ship’s Cadet program and coordinates all cadet activities.

AENS-Acting Ensign: The Acting Ensign is the senior cadet on the ship and assists the Commandant of the Cadet Corps.

CIO-Command Intelligence Officer: Officer responsible for gathering and assimilating information on those considered hostile to the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet. The CIO also keeps current on information received from Starfleet Intelligence. As necessary, Security falls under the CIO’s authority. The CIO is usually part of a landing party to do their job as necessary.

COM-Command Officer: A general Command officer who is appointed to a task as needed by the CO or XO. Usually, this is a junior officer who acts as a command aide.

CHM-Chief Helmsman: Officer responsible for navigation and plotting course. Reports to the CO on navigational hazards.

HEL-Helmsman: A junior helm officer.

CN-Chief Navigator: Officer in charge of navigational plots and programs. Senior navigator on the ship.

NAV-Navigator: A junior navigation officer.

CST-Chief Starchartsman: Officer in charge of starcharts, documentation of celestial bodies, and updates navigational charts.

CAO-Administration Officer: Officer responsible for assisting the CO and XO with the legal, educational, and public affairs administration of the ship and crew.

CPR-Command Personnel Officer: Officer responsible for assisting the CO and XO with handling personnel records, promotions, and awards.

DUTY POSITIONS FOR ENLISTED PERSONNEL

CCPO-Command Chief Petty Officer (or CMCPO-Command Master Chief Petty Officer or CSCPO-Command Senior Chief Petty Officer depending on current rank): The most senior Chief Petty Officer on the ship who is responsible for all enlisted personnel. The CCPO answers to the CO, XO, C2O, and C3O.

C/HM-Helmsman’s Mate: Helm systems technician and operator.

C/NM-Navigator’s Mate: Navigation systems technician and operator.

C/AA-Administrative Assistant: Enlisted personnel who are the ship’s file clerks. Also acts as general administrative assistant to CAO and CPR.

C/YO-Ship’s Yeoman: Enlisted personnel who act as secretaries for the CO, XO, and ship.

C/IS-Intelligence Specialist: Enlisted specialist in a particular field of intelligence. Assists and reports to the CIO.
