Although officially based aboard the USS Jamestown, the 108th Mobile Surgical Hospital (or the "Crazy Eights") is a detachment of Starfleet Marines that can be deployed on any habitable planetary body and function on its own without aid from a parent starship, providing valuable medical aid for those in need.
Originally a Combined Arms unit with concentrations in the Aerospace and Special Operations branches, the 108th was converted to a MSH (pronounced "mash") unit in the hopes of better assisting the Jamestown in her current mission of cleaning up the former Cardassian Union and surrounding space after the end of the Dominion War. The 108th MSH stands by to provide medical aid to wounded refugees and any allied troops injured in various skirmishes with rogue Cardassian and Breen elements as the cleanup effort continues. Considering the high risk sphere of influence, Colonel Schreck and his staff have made a number of elective changes to the traditional MSH organizational chart to better adapt to these new conditions.
Be sure to follow the zany antics of our Starfleet Marine surgeons as they cut and stitch their way across the Alpha Quadrant, operating as disruptors and photon torpedoes burst around them, snatching laughs and love between amputations and ketracel white. Starring...

The Starfleet Marine Corps employs a large number of different Branches of Service (equivalent to Starfleet naval departments such as Security and Engineering) in which a Marine can choose to serve. Each Branch of Service has a wide variety of MOS's (Marine Occupational Specialties) to choose from as well. Each branch has a distinctive uniform tunic color, but for expediency's sake, only those branches represented by the 108th MSH are detailed below.
Medical------------Teal (Standard Fleet Color)
Mecha-------------------------Silver (Light Grey)
Special Operations---------------------------Khaki
Support-------------Gold (Standard Fleet Color)
Aerospace----------Red (Standard Fleet Color)
NOTE: Certain 108th MSH Medical branch personnel are duplicates of positions in the USS Jamestown's Medical Department. The 108th personnel in these positions do not supercede those personnel serving in those same positions in the Medical department, but are intended to function primarily when the MSH is deployed without drawing personnel away from the Jamestown's own staff. When aboard ship however, 108th personnel perform various duties to assist the corresponding departments aboard the Jamestown.
Medical branch Marines assigned to the 108th can serve in one of the following positions:
=/\= Chief Surgeon (Filled by the OIC): The 108th's Chief Surgeon is rated by the SFMC as a Medical Commander, which is a medical doctor who commands a unit of FIeld Hospital size or larger. Units smaller than Field Hospital are usually not staffed by doctors, and so are led either by Charge Nurses or the senior C-Medic or I-Medic present. Marines of this MOS receive leadership and medical administration training.
=/\= Surgeon (4 Marines): A medical doctor who specializes in extensive dissection and repair of the human body is a surgeon. Almost all SFMC Surgeons are board certified in both thoracic and abdominal surgery, and most in at least one other surgical subspecialty as well. The most popular are currently cardiovascular, neurosurgery, or othopedic surgery.
=/\= Counselor: Board certified psychologists who specialize in psychological trauma and coping mechanisms fill this MOS, and are to a ship's counselor as an emergency room doctor is to a family practicioner. In addition to treating psychological casualties, SFMC Counselors often evaluate unit morale and morale boosting strategies. They may even be called upon to judge the effectiveness of psychological warfare operations.
=/\= Behavioral Science Specialist (2 Marines): If Counselors are 'physicians of the mind,' then BSS's are the nurses--most often triage nurses who prioritize casualties' mental states (deciding if patients need to see a Counselor, can be counseled by the BSS, or require no counseling at all). BSS's also act as frontline crisis counselors for battlefield stress and PTS (Post-Traumatic Stress) disorders.
=/\= Chaplain: Chaplains see to the spritual well being of the unit and it's patients by performing services and providing moral and religious education. The Chaplain Corps recognizes over 450 religious faiths, and Chaplains are trained in multiple faiths whenever possible. No distinction is made via MOS identifiers to distinguish between faiths.
=/\= Pharmacist: The pharmacist formulates, replicates, and dispenses medications. They are also responsible for keeping a running file of all patient medications and for informing the physician when a potential or actual medication error in prescribing has occoured or when prescribed drugs may interact adversely.
=/\= Charge Nurse (Scrub Nurse): In a medical unit, the seniot member of the nursing staff, and usually the commander of the non-physician staff, is the charge nurse. To qualify for this MOS, nurses must have at least two years experience (in fiction, not necessarily reality) and attend the SFMC Academy's Primary Leadership Development Course.
=/\= Scrub Nurse (5 Marines): While there are many specialties of nurse that are lumped together into a single MOS, a few specialties rate a seperate one. Nurses who lead surgical nursing efforts and have special training in surgical procedures and protocols are rated as Scrub Nurses.
=/\= Nurse (12 Marines): Nurses are educated in medical skills, theory, history, ethics, and the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. They are qualified to perform a variety of procedures such as wound care, obtaining IV access, administering drugs, triage, CPR, diagnostics interpretation, conscious sedation, and much more.
=/\= Nurse Anesthetist (4 Marines): The anesthetist is responsible for administering and monitoring general anesthesia, whether by chemical means or neural calipers. Anesthetists are also responsible for intubation (when applicable) and for monitoring the patient's respiratory status, neural activity, blood pressure, and pulse.
=/\= Combat Medic (24 Marines): The backbone of the Medical Branch is the Combat Medic (C-Medic), paramedic-trained emergency medical personnel who often operate autonomously in the field. They are assigned individually in support of other units, or as part of a larger medical unit where they may serve as medical technicians in Mobile Surgical Hospitals or on trauma teams.
=/\= Respiratory Therapist (2 Marines): RT's are trained and educated to administer techniques that will improve pulmonary (lung) function and oxygenation. Their primary role on a trauma team is airway management. RT's may also be responsible for administering a variety of tests that measure lung function. =/\= Physical Therapist (2 Marines): A PT seeks to restore function or prevent disability in the mobility of a patient after injury or illness. The PT uses various techniques to treat patients, and is educated in psychological strategies to motivate patients. |
The 108th utilizes the TMS-1 Talon Class Medium Mecha. The Talon is one of the most heavily armed Mecha in its weight class. Its ballistic weapons give it a solid long range punch, and its four pulse phasers can do terrific damage at short range. Ammunition expenditure is a problem for all ballistic weapon systems, however, so the Talon pilot must be careful of how he uses his ammunition.
TMS-1 Technical Specs: The eight Mecha branch personnel assigned to the 108th are listed either under the 505 or 525 MOS, the Medium Mecha Pilot MOS for enlisted Marines or Officers as the case may be. Due to strict personnel allocation, all 108th Mecha branch personnel are required to qualify as Mecha technicians in at least two areas: Power, Armament, Sensor, Support, or Defensive Systems. |
All SpecOps Marines in the 108th are listed under MOS 890: Special Duty Assignment. Rather than a primary MOS, this MOS is used to temporarily detach an operator from their regular duties. This usually involves a high security operation of some sort. All Omega Team members are MOS 890s to keep their actual job qualifications and team composition classified. Omega is the name given to a SpecOps unit specially trained in covert special actions, also known as 'black' or 'shadow' ops. They exist to perform missions which are usually considered politically sensitive or vital to Federation security. Omega units are not normally employed as battlefield resources, however they can be used in that capacity for advanced reconnaissance. These teams may also be used to conduct missions requiring security procedures higher than is normally afforded by other SpecOps units. Generally, all Omega Team members are recruited from other SpecOps units, so they are highly trained and experienced operators.
The 108th is one of few units that maintain an active Omega Team at all times. The 28 Marines assigned to this team keep the Omega designation because of the variety of skills and experience each team member has. Some Marines might have scout or sniper training, be experienced recon Marines, been assigned to a HEAT or starship seizure unit in the past, or have filled a variety of other billets in the past. This Omega Team is an elite and highly trained ground force serving as a close-in defense unit intended to protect the 108th on the ground from enemy ground forces in the area. If the need arises, the 108th's Omega Team can be temporarily detached to perform other missions nearby. The Omega Team is commanded by the Support Administrator (The 108th's DOIC), the Marine in charge of all non Medical Branch personnel. |
The 108th's MP's serve in a number of functions that contribute to the unit's security as a whole. They maintain the security of the hospital itself, incarcerate and guard any POW's that might be in the unit's custody, and they are the 108th's law enforcement arm. Should disaster strike, the MP's are the last line of defense (behind the 108th's Mecha and SpecOps units) between a hostile force and the 108th's medical staff and their patients. Should the need arise, the 108th's Military Police can be augmented from Security Department personnel from aboard the Jamestown. |
Members of this branch of the 108th fall under the SFMC's Aerospace Mobility Command; assigned the MOS's 641 (Mobility Pilot) and 644 (Mobility Systems Officer). Additionally, a small number of medical personnel seperate from the hospital staff are assigned to this branch of the unit, providing vital care to patients while en route to the MSH.
The 180th MSH currently employs two types of medical shuttle:
The S-30 Valkyrie is the primary tactical medi-evac craft for the SFMC. To wounded Marines, this vehicle is the most welcome sight on the battlefield. Carrying a pair of C-Medics and able to evacuate up to a dozen wounded in a single trip, the Valkyrie is a vital part of SFMC operations. With its excellent agility, good armor, and defensive countermeasures, the S-30 is a very durable vehicle. Valkyrie pilots are known for their skill and determination in getting to the wounded, regardless of personal risk. For this reason, Infantry and other ground forces will go to extreme lengths to rescue a downed Valkyrie crew. The 108th employs 4 S-30 Valkyries crewed by a single pilot and two C-Medics each.
The S-34 Valor is the larger, warp capable version of the Valkyrie. Much like an SFMC drop ship, the S-34 is a warp capable spacecraft designed to rapidly enter atmosphere and fly aerodynamically. The S-34 Valor is equipped with two pieces of hardware. First, a pressurized docking collar can be extended up two two meters from the bottom center of the vehicle, sealing itself to a standard airlock door or even to the flat surface of a hull. Cutting torches can then be used to effect an entry into a disabled vessel. Second, the vehicle's interior can be divided into compartments via force fields and bulkheads into seperate and self contained areas. This prevents the spread of biohazards and microweapons like nanites. Carrying six stasis units and a complete field medical team, the Valor is capable of evacuating and treating up to 36 wounded personnel at a time. Pilots who fly this vehicle must rely heavily on countermeasures and armed escorts, as there are often surgical operations being conducted on board during flight. The 108th currently employs 2 S-34 Valors crewed by a pilot, mobility systems, officer, and a medical team consisting of a surgeon, two scrub nurses, and three C-Medics each. All aerospace craft operated by the 108th are serviced and maintained by a team of eight aerospace maintenance technicians. Should the need arise, this maintenance crew can be augmented by Engineering Department personnel from aboard the Jamestown. |
