During a starship’s tour of duty, the Sciences Department is always the most active. Sciences studies, investigates, analyzes, and records scientific phenomenon. There is also opportunity for experimentation and research. On occasion this department (and others) may have civilian research personnel on staff or as project supervisors, in which case the Sciences Department is at their disposal. Medical life sciences are also an aspect of this department.
DUTY POSITIONS FOR COMMISSIONED PERSONNEL
CSO-Chief Science Officer: This is the Sciences Department Chief. He or she is responsible for the operations of this department and all personnel within. The CSO is primarily a supervisor, as his or her primary duty is to supply the CO with information and immediate intelligence (working with the CIO as necessary in gathering intelligence). As a supervisor, the CSO oversees various projects and reasearch and involves him or herself in such only as necessary. The CSO is part of the Command Staff and answers to the CO and XO.
ASC-Assistant Chief Science Officer: This is the CSO’s assistant. The ASO is more directly involved with projects and research, and reports to the CSO on day-to-day activities.
SCI-Science Officer: This is a general Sciences officer who is normally involved in scientific research. Supervises a task or duty as assigned by the ASO and CSO and acts as their assistant. Normally, a SCI is part of an away team unless an officer with a specific field of knowledge is needed.
CCS-Chief of Computer Sciences: The CCS is acknowledged in all forms of computer application, programming, and technology. He or she is the senior computer scientist in charge of this division.
CSE-Computer Scientist: A junior computer scientist.
CMS-Chief of Mechanical Sciences: This covers mechanics as applied to science and technology. This includes cybernetics, metallurgy, xenomechanics, biomechanics, and instrumentation. The CMS is the senior mechanics scientist in charge of this division. (Note: This division may be aided by or aid Engineering.)
MC-Mechanical Scientist: A junior mechanical scientist.
CAS-Chief Astronomer: The astronomy division studies celestial bodies and phenomenon. The CAS is the senior astronomer in charge of this division.
AST-Astronomer: A junior astronomer.
CB-Chief Biologist: The CB is the senior biologist in charge of this division. Biology is the study of living organisms and their life processes.
GBO-General Biologist: A general biologist who can be assigned the duties of astrobiology, genetic biology, or xenobiology as required.
BIO-Biologist: A junior biologist.
CZ-Chief Zoologist: The CZ is the senior zoologist in charge of this division. Zoology is the study of animals.
XZ-Xenozoologist: A junior zoologist acknowledged in extraterrestrial zoology.
ZOO-Zoologist: A junior zoologist.
CBT-Chief Botanist: The CBT is the senior botanist in charge of this division. Botany is the study of plant life.
GBN-General Botanist: This is a general botanist who can be assigned the duties of xenobotany, horticulture, or hydroponics.
BOT-Botanist: A junior botanist.
CAN-Chief Anthropologist: The CAN is the senior anthropologist in charge of this division. Anthropology is the study of human behavior and development.
GAN-General Anthropologist: This is a general anthropologist who can be assigned the duties of xenoanthropology, sociology, linguistics, archaeology, philosophy, or history.
ANT-Anthropologist: A junior anthropologist.
CPH-Chief Physicist: The CPH is the senior physicist in charge of this division. Physics is the study of the various interactions of matter and energy.
GPO-General Physicist: A physicist who can be assigned the duties of geophysics or astrophysics.
PHY-Physicist: A junior physicist.
CCH-Chief Chemist: The CCH is the senior chemist in charge of the division. Chemistry is the science of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter and substances.
ACH-Astrochemist: A junior chemist acknowledged in celestial chemistry.
CHE-Chemist: A junior chemist.
DUTY POSITIONS FOR ENLISTED PERSONNEL
E/SM-Sciences Mate: The most senior enlisted person in Sciences. He or she is most knowledgeable of science equipment and systems, and is responsible for all enlisted Sciences personnel. The SM answers to the CSO and ASO.
