Varanasi has Vishwanath Temple(Golden Temple)- the most famous temple built in 1490 A.D.
It is 15.5. metres high structure and its architecture is a mixture of Islamic and Hindu Style. Situated in small and busy lanes
in deep interiors this temple attracts thousands of devotees.
Here, the Shiva linga is worshiped five times a day, with shehnai and tabla(musical Indian instruments) and bhajans(chorus).
It is the 820 Kg. gold plated top which attracts many tourists. There is a "Wisdom well" called
"Gyan Vapi" situated at the entrance of the temple. The most famous Goddess temple is of Goddess Durga. Built in the 17th century by Rani Bhavani of Nathore in Bengal is often called the Monkey Temple, as one finds many monkeys playing on its top. Mother Durga is used to give strength and power to fight evil. There is Durgakund (tank) just next to the temple where people bathe and relax. Just a few steps ahead of Durga Temple, is the Tulsi Manas Mandir, which has been newly constructed with white marble. The entire Ram- Charitmanas (Holy Book of Hindus) has been inscribed on the walls. The Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is another few steps built by Goswami Tulsidas. It is visited by many devotees daily, but its prominent days are Tuesdays and Saturdays. Apart from these, there are many temples inthis spiritual city, where devotion and peace seems to come automatically. To name some are: Sankati Devi Temple, Shitala Devi Temple, Kaal Bhairav, Mirtyujaya Mahadev and Gauri Temple. |
