Beralium is a trading city in the NorthEast, near the Jun River. It is known as the "City of Jewels". Beralium is an ancient city and legend says it was built by an extinct tribe of elves, using the most incredible gems and jewels in Mersaim. Every building, every arch, every street is encrusted with sapphires, rubies, emeralds, diamonds, and every other precious gem known. Elven scholars speculate that the stones had been removed from the southeastern reaches of the Forgotten Peaks, near the Fae Lands and carried to Beralium. The Forgotten Peaks are rich in gems, but the Dwarven Wars keep them hidden and well protected within the mountains. No one is quite sure if that is truly where the gems came from, and many speculate they are a trick of magic, as no one has ever been able to remove a single one from the city. Many have tried, but all have met with failure and disaster. The city itself is a wonder. In the evenings, when the lamplights are lit, the city literally shimmers with the reflected glow of thousands and thousands of the precious stones. The city itself is a major trading town, where one can find anything from foodstuffs to the finest cloth, for the right price, of course. The town is mainly elven-run, but there are shops and tents from every corner of Mersiam. There are often tribes of nomads camped near the walls and bargains can be easily found there, if you know what you are looking for. The Magistrate runs the town with military efficiency, and fairness. The Garrisons are well respected, and crime is low, despite the constant flux of people coming and going. Outside the town and beyond the Magistrate's grasp, however is a small camp where the underbelly of society meet. They are petty thieves and cons. Frequently, they make their living luring travelers to their camp and enticing them into games of chance, which are fixed and intended to lighten the hapless traveler's coin purse. |
