Kinley

The Surnames of Ireland by Edward MacLysaght states:

(pg .184)" Mac Kinley, -Kinlay Usually this is the Scottish Mac Fhionnlaoich (fair hero) in Antrim; but sometimes it is for the Irish Mac an Leagha (see MacAlee). Bibl. MIF"

(pg .3) "Mac Alee, -Alea Mac an Leagha. This name, as the Irish form indicates, is that of a medical family. It is located in Ulster, mainly in Co. Antrim, where it is also anglicized MacClay and MacLea and sometimes MacKinley. IF"

More Irish Families by Edward MacLysaght states:

(pg. 111) MacGINLEY, Ginnell MacKINLEY

"MacGinley and MacKinley are both numerous names in Ulster, the former, now as in the seventeenth century, belonging predominently to Co. Donegal, the latter being more widespread in that province. In spite of their similarity and proximity they do not appear to have been often used as synonyms. MacGinley is true native Irish. ...Reeves in his notes in the "Visitation of Derry Diocese" states that O Cionnfaolaidh was first anglicized O'Kynnele, which in time became MacKinely and MacGinley in Donegal and Tyrone; but this opinion is now discounted.
MacKinley or MacKinlay on the other hand is usually of Scottish origin (Mac Fhionn Laoich); but it can also be Irish Gaelic viz: Mac an Leagha (son of the physician): Maelechlainn Mac an Leagha - anglicized MacKinley-(the death of whose son an "eminent" man in his own art, i.e. medicine, in 1531 is noticed in the Annnals of Loch Ce) was the author, or perhaps only the transcriber of an Irish medical manuscropt now in the King's Inns Library, Dublin.
The MacKinlays are mentioned as physicians in J.F.Kenney's list of famous families with whom hereditary professions are associated....The best known of the MacKinleys were the Presbyterian family of Conagher near Ballymoney, Co. Antrim. One of these was Francis MacKinley who was hanged for his part in the 1798 insurrection. William MacKinley (1843-1901), President of the United States, who was assassinated in his fourth year of office, was not (as has been stated) the direct descendant of Francis MacKinley but was of the same family, as also was John MacKinley (fl. 1819-1834), the Ulster poet..."
