A History of the Kindred

BACK

A note regarding this treatise. It was written, originally, in the year 1910, by myself, Marius (the manuscript has been updated several times over the last ninety years). It has been based on the events I've witnessed over my unlife, and on a number of conversations I've had with note-worthy Kindred (mainly Zillah, Veddartha and Cappacodius). It should be noted that in the below text I have not covered the subject (or origins) of the Chinese Ten Thousand. It should also be noted that this author does not believe in the existence of Gehenna, and can find no definite proof to convince him otherwise.

The Beginning
The origins of the Kindred are lost in the dawn of time. We certainly predate the Greek and Egyptian civilisations, as well as the coming of the Kine to China and the Far East. The first of our race is said to be Caine (also referred to by other names, the commonest being Enkil or Enoch; Khayyin being the Assamite's favoured name). He is said to have slain his brother Abel and have been cursed by God. However there has never been any direct proof of this. God has never appeared to us, and even the Baali only claim to worship demons, not the Devil himself. I prefer to believe that this is a legend used by Caine to explain his existence, and lend grandeur to his position (It is important to note that the Hebrew legends were in existence at the time of the first city). The Second generation remains silent as to what they know of the beginning, but it is unlikely Caine would reveal his source of power to them. The Hebrew witch/goddess Lilith has often been connected with Caine, (she also appears later in the story of the Embraced). It is possible that she had something to do with the creation of our race. She is said to have dealt often with the Umbra {spirit world}. The truth of her involvement with the Kindred is said to have been laid down in the Cycle of Lilith; however this document has long been lost to us. Regardless of his origins a being calling himself Caine came out of the wastes and entered the city of Enoch (also known as Uniech, Enkil and En'esh) later to be called the First City (the First City is suspected to have lain somewhere north of Sinai).

The Second and Third Generations
When Caine came to Enoch he was greeted by the people as a god, and made their ruler. It was there that he gave in to his loneliness and created the Second Generation. They numbered four, but would later only be remembered as three: Enosh (also known as Enoch), Zillah, Irad and Haqim. Of them little is known. Enosh is said to have been the steward of the city before the arrival of the First, and is said to have continued as Caine's second in command after his embrace. Zillah is rumoured to have at one time been his lover, whilst nothing is known of Irad (some rumour him to have been a solider); Haqim is said to have been the leader of Caine's army. He quarrelled with, and attacked his master. Caine drained him and left him out for the sun. Luckily (for Haquim) his loyal followers dragged him off into the desert, and over the centuries he began to recover, eventually founding clan Assamite.
Caine then forbade them to create further progeny, and being under his watchful gaze they obeyed. All was peaceful until the Great Flood came1. The city was destroyed, and its people scattered. In the aftermath the Second Generation asked Caine to help them rebuild. However he blamed himself for the flood and refused to repeat what he considered his sins. Instead he wandered Eastwards and left the lands of the West.
The Second City2 was built under the direction of the First Brood. Without the threat of Caine's wrath hanging over them the Second gave in to temptation and the 3rd Generation were created. Their number at this time was 12. They were weaker than their sires and this chaffed with several of them. For 2000 years the Third ruled the Second City, under the direction of the Second. The Third soon spawned a Fourth, but there a halt was called by the Second, one that was obeyed for the most part. Enosh bored of his role and left the city after 1000 years to follow Caine into the East. On his journey he embraced Saulot, the first to attain Golconda. Enosh then escorted his new progeny back to the Second City and home of the Embraced.
Ba'al, progeny of Khayman, had turned to the worship of Demons since his departure. When Enosh arrived back with Saulot, he saw his opportunity. In the hopes of gaining a powerful ally he tried to convince Saulot to join him. However Saulot ran to Enosh and told him of Ba'al's perversion. The Second joined together and drove Ba'al out of the city, laying a curse on his bloodline (the Baali)3. It was the backlash of this action that led to the fall of the Second City. Absimilliard (progeny of Irad) saw this demonstration of power and determined to increase his own. In the confusion of Ba'al's unmasking he rose against his sire and became the first Diabolist; it was this action that was to lay the curse of the Nosferatu upon him and his clan: they all bear the face of the Beast.
The city was torn with strife and chaos ruled in the streets. No one knew whom to trust and mortals were slain without a thought in huge numbers. Irad was slain; Enosh was nearly destroyed having been put to the flame; only Zillah escaped unharmed. Brujah was diabolised by his progeny Troile. Ennouia was attacked by her fledgling Gangrel and nearly slain (she was driven in to torpor for several aeons- thereby creating the myth that Gangrel was the founder of the Gangrel).
The death of one of the Second caused a huge sandstorm to erupt that raged for ten years. When the dust finally settled the Second City was buried without trace. It remains lost to this day. It is speculated that Enosh was left to be buried under the sands and thus escaped death. He may well know its present location.
Those remaining fled to the city of Kala-At-Shergat, ruled by Shaitain (Shaitain was the progeny of Saulot and the first none-Baali to turn to Demon Worship)4. The rule of Kindred at Kala-At-Shergat was brought to an end only 200 years later. The Fourth spawned a Fifth and they a Sixth. They treated mortals like cattle and committed horrors that have never been seen since. The Third failed to bring their progeny to heel and eventually the kine acted to prove that they were a potent force in the world. They rose up, and slew many of the weaker Kindred. Those surviving vampires were driven from the city and they dispersed into the world.

The fate of the 3rd generation.
All of the third entered torpor after the disaster of Kala-At-Shergat and have only emerged infrequently since.
Absimilliard, the founder of the Nosferatu, took Mekare's power and fled to what would become Russia. The Toreador Antediluvian, Arkiel, is said to have spent some time in the Far East and then settled in the area that became France. Brujah never returned to the world of the flesh but Troile and his bloodline settled in Carthage. Cappadocius, the head of a Death Cult, went to the lands that would become Northern Italy, whilst maintaing a presence in Egypt. Ennouia's resting-place is unknown. However unusually some detail is known about her mortal life. It is said that she was a descendant of Lilith and it is through her children that the Magi came about. It is also said that she was the mortal lover of Sargatanas and that he fathered the gypsies on her.
Malkav (the first mortal to be embraced who suffered from insanity) left for the Celtic lands. The Shadow installed himself in the land that would become Spain and continued his research into God and the supernatural beings of the world. Sargatanas (first of the Ravnos), who was known as the mortal lover of Ennouia' is thought to have gone to ground in the land that was to become the Kingdom of Bohemia. Whilst his bloodline took to wandering with the Gypsy. Saulot's resting-place is unknown. Tzimisce settled in the Carpithian Mountains where his followers ruled the locals and spawned legends that would become best-selling books. Veddartha settled in Rome and aided that culture's development. It is generally thought that at the time of the fall of Rome he moved to the Isle of Britain.

Set and the Reborn
The story of Set5 deserves a mention. He is perhaps the only member of the Third who is openly visible in the mythology of the Kine. His story is recorded in the old myths of Egypt, with the gaps having been filled in by an observer to the events.
In the land that was to be known as Egypt there ruled a mortal named Osiris [6], who was brother-husband to Isis. He also had a younger, Set. Set lusted after power and began to plot a revolt. However his plan was discovered, and Osiris banished him. He wandered to the North, and eventually came upon the Second City, where he was embraced.
Years later, Set left the city and returned to his homeland, with plans of deposing his brother. However he returned to find Osiris also changed, having been brought across by an unknown member of our kind. Set seized his weaker brother and entombed him, while Isis and her son fled to the Were-Crocodiles for aid. Isis eventually (who was a mage) managed to release Osiris but Set tore him limb from limb. He imprisoned Isis and Horus (who's eye he tore out). They were held captive until the last of Osiris soldiers rescued them in a dawn raid.
Isis then used her art to restore the fallen Osiris to his undeath. With his re-emergence there came the relavation: Osiris had sired a small group of vampires that would fight in the war with Set. Horus finally expired from his wound, but the witch performed a rite over his body, which gave them hope for the future. However Set was ready. The few of Osiris (with the aid of the Changing Breed) were stormed by the many of Set. It is said that the battle between the two brothers shook the earth and ripped the sky, but the conclusion was never in doubt. Set destroyed his brother with a gust of fire. Even the Magick of Isis couldn't bring Set down. It looked as though the end was here for the Resistance. It was at this moment that the Wraith of Horus breached the Shroud and struck Set down.
Set then retreated from public view and began to manipulate Egypt from the shadows. However Horus was to return as one of the Reborn (an immortal of sorts) and would lead a personal Jyhad to revival ours.
While the story may not be entirely true it does serve to give an impression of the enormous power the Second Brood possess.

Caine in the East
It is near the end of the Second City that the last definite sighting of Caine occurred. In His wanderings he came to China, where He became known as Izanagi (He Who Invites). He gathered a group of Kine to Him and crossed the sea to Japan. It was here He set about raising a civilisation. As the years passed Caine became lonely and took mortal wives. One of these, Akasha, pleaded with Him to embrace her. Caine finally relented and Akasha became the fifth of the Second Generation. After several centuries she began to beg Caine to allow her to sire a Childe. Again Caine eventually agreed and Jiki-Ketsu-Gaki (Hungry Dead) joined the ranks of the Third.
Gaki was well named. As a mortal he had few morals and killed without a thought. As a Vampire his bloodlust was insatiable. In an effort to gain more power he committed diablerie upon his sire and then challenged Caine. Caine destroyed him without a second thought and laid the curse of Consumption upon his bloodline (the Gaki).
His bloodline evolved into the Japanese Mafia Lords and the leaders of the Zaibatsu.

Carthage and the fall of the True Brujah
As the Roman Empire began to form more and more Kindred gathered in Italy. They centralised in Rome but spread throughout the Empire. They were governed by a council, know as the Inconnu. The council was made up of representatives of the Ventrue, LaSombra, Malkavians, Toreadors and a few Brujah.
They found themselves in conflict with the Brujah Empire of Carthage, in Africa. Thusly they guided their kine into war. The wars were long and savage but they didn't turn into genocidal missions until the Baali intervened. The Baali had nurtured its hatred for the other clans and devised a scheme to eliminate their enemies. They began to feed the Inconnu rumours that the Brujah were demon worshippers. They even went as far as to let a few of their number be captured and interrogated to convince the sceptics. The Council was inflamed and the Third Punic war (-146BC) saw the total defeat of the Carthagians and the sack of Carthage. The city was put to the torch for 17 nights7 and any kindred were hunted down and destroyed. Most of the Brujah were destroyed and those few that remained fled into the shadows.
As the years passed their bloodline changed into the warrior clan it is today. (It is speculated that the Childer of the militant Troile survived far better than those of Brujah- Darwinism at work in the Undead!).

The progeny of the Blood of Zeernebooch
In 493 AD a strange experiment took place, which was to give rise to one of the stranger Kindred bloodlines: the Kiasyd. Three members of Clan LaSombra took an interest in the fairy world and its links to their power of Obtenebration. In a vile ritual the LaSombra elder Marconius received a transfusion of kith blood and a strange substance called "the blood of Zeernebooch - god of the underworld".
Marconius underwent a radical transformation, gaining several feet in height, his face becoming more like that of the classical elf's and gaining solid black eyes. The Kiasyd were born. He soon began to gain power other the beings of the spirit world, and left his former clan to pursue his studies. His prodigy has become known as some of the greatest of the kindred scholars, but also wield powerful offensive might (as shown by the siege of Strasbourg).

The birth of the Tremere
The 11th century saw the greatest shock to the world of the Awakened since the fall of the Second City. The Carpathian Mountains were not only the home of the Tzimisce but also a group of human Magi (the descendants of Lilith, through Ennouia). The foremost of these was known as Tremere. He had already lived for over two centuries, secure in his Magick. However the divinations of these mortals led them to believe that their magick would be weakened over the next few centuries and death forced upon them. In desperation he looked for other methods of Immortality, assigning his apprentice Goratrix to the task. Tremere's search led him to the Tzimisce but they felt threatened by his power and began to mobilise against the Mages. He tricked a clan of Garou- "the Shadow Lords" into waging war upon the Tzimisce. This occupied the Tzimisce until Goratrix's research was complete. Goratrix captured a Tzimisce elder and forced it to embrace two of his own apprentices. After a year of further experimentation he gained the Vampire's secret. In 1022 Tremere and seven of his followers (including Etrius, Meerlinda, Abetorius and Goratrix). After long hours of rituals the blood was drained from the two apprentices and transferred to the bodies of the eight. They became Kindred, but at a horrible price to them. No longer could they work Magick!
Tremere and his followers went into hiding and after a century of research they created Thaumaturgy. They used their new found blood wizardry to discover the location of Saulot (1133). After diablerising several of the Salubri they raided Saulot's lair. Tremere sank his teeth into the slumbering Antediluvian and House Tremere became a Clan. They moved swiftly: spreading propaganda that the Salubri were "Soul Eaters". They tricked the Kindred into aiding them in hunting down the Salubri and putting them to the fire. The Tzimisce, realising their danger declared Jyhad upon them and bitter war raged. The Tremere looked in danger of losing the conflict until Goratrix performed a groundbreaking experiment. Using a similar enchantment to that which created the first Tremere he mixed the essences of a Nosferatu and a Gangrel. The Gargoyle bloodline was born. The first gargoyle was sent out into the populace. Within a week a huge army was gathered, and the Tzimisce went into retreat. The Tremere then spread out into the world, taking Vienna as their capital.

The Fall
So the Kindred grew out across the Globe. They ruled like Kings, ever present and all-powerful, or so they thought. However all this was to change. In 1229 the Roman Catholic Church set up the Inquisition. While this was aimed at stamping out heresy it took a darker turn. Somehow a member of the Kindred was captured and the Church was convinced that evil really did exist. (The likelihood is that the activities of The Children of Darkness8 were the source of this breech of secrecy, or some whisper that one of the Tremere high council was less than cautious in his activities). They declared their own Jyhad upon us. The losses were horrific. The Kine that we all believed were no danger to us were driving us towards extinction.
This was not the only danger that threatened the Kindred, however. In response to the threat of the Inquisition the elders fled leaving their fledglings to do battle with the Church. In Spain this lead to a group of young Brujah declaring a counter war on the church. At the same time a group of young Tzimisce gathered in Transilvania and discovered the Vaulderie. By sharing their vitea amongst large numbers they found that they could break their blood bonds in favour of a larger yet loser tie. The two groups soon joined together.
At the same time the Assamites, using the cover of the Inquisition, widened their attacks on the Elders. The Anarchs concluded a treaty with them. In return for immunity to Assamite attacks they would aid them to destroy Shadow, and most of the other LaSombra elders. Those who survived these attacks soon shifted their allegiance.
The situation worsened still - the gargoyles had rebelled against their masters. The Tremere, which could have acted to put down the Anarchs were fighting for their very survival against their own soldiers.

9 Giovanni rose up against their masters. The Giovanni had long been in the service of the Cappacodians, however their leader Augustus, like Absimilliard long before him, was jealous of his master's power. They struck quickly, diablerising they way through the Cappacodians and slaying those they couldn't sink their fangs into. Augustus Giovanni diablerised Cappacodius and made the Giovanni a clan in their own right (1444). Those few that survived fled and became the Nagaraja bloodline (It is rumoured that Augustus didn't completely diablerize Cappacodius and that his spirit guides the Nagaraja). It is speculated that a few ancient Cappacodians, who lay in torpor in Egypt, were never found. If these Methuselahs do still exist then the Giovanni would be wise to watch their backs. The entire operation was viewed with horror by most Kindred: it wasn't even re-enforced by a propaganda campaign as the activities of the Tremere were.
In response to these threats a group of Kindred met and found a method to save the Embraced. In 1279 the Camarilla was formed, although it didn't meet as a full council until 1486. This was a coalition of clans (latter to be known as a sect). It contained the Venture, The Tremere, Brujah, toreador, Gangrel, Malkavian and the Nosferatu. They laid down a code of conduct for their methods: The Pax Vampiric. The most important of these laws (or traditions as they came to be known) was that of the Masquerade- no Vampire would ever reveal himself to a mortal or to provide existence of the Awakened. The path for the future seemed to have been found. This unified front was able to win the battle against the Anarchs, especially after the Tremere had dealt with the Gargoyles. In 1486 the Camarilla declared a blood hunt upon the whole Assamite clan. Armies were thrown at the Assamite's fortress and a Nosferatu managed to penetrate Alamut.
On the 23rd October 1493 the leaders of the fractions gathered in England, and the Convention of Thorns was signed. The convention called for peace between the Embraced and a strict observance of the Masquerade. All Anarchs could either join the Camarilla or be independent as long as they observed the Masquerade. The Assamites were banned from committing the Amarath on Kindred from Clans outside their own. In return they were guaranteed that no action would be taken against them ever again, and that they were allowed to remain outside the Camarilla. Peace was returning and the Inquisition could be dealt with.
Those Anarchs who remained outside the Camarilla soon formed their own sect: The Sabbat. This sect was composed mainly of Tzimisce and LaSombra but also included "antitribu" from many other clans. (The relationship between clan and Antitribu was very strained in most cases, or out-right hostile in the case of the Tremere).
Not all of the Tzimisce joined the Sabbat though. The clan existed as twenty 'houses' before the Anarch revolt. After the revolt only thirteen of these houses still existed. They were fiercely opposed to the Sabbat and its large number of Tzimisce Anarchs. Delegations were sent to the conference that preceded the Convention, but the houses could not reach a unanimous decision about entrance to the Camarilla. They chose to stay outside it and instead formed the Ordena League. An association of the thirteen houses who maintain neutrality to the Camarilla and quiet hostility to the Sabbat.
In 1496 all the Assamites were required to gather for the Treaty of Tyre. The treaty re-enforced the earlier Convention and more importantly allowed the Tremere to enforce a surety upon the clan. By means of a magick ritual the Assamites were rendered incapable of drinking blood of fellow vampires. However not all clan members gathered at Tyre. Those that did not remained free of the spell and became Antitribu, working for the Sabbat and the Black Hand.

The Sects
After the Convention of Thorns 3 sects emerged. These would form the basis of Kindred society and indeed shape the world of both Kin and Kine.

The Camarilla.
The Camarilla was formed as a response to the Inquisition and holds itself to be a "world-wide council of Vampires". They state that all Kindred are members of the Camarilla unless they state otherwise. The Camarilla is ruled by an Inner Circle of seven that meet every 13 years at a Grand Conclave, normally held in Venice. The council represents the Ventrue, Tremere, Brujah, toreador, Malkavian, Nosferatu and Gangrel. Each has one vote and are meant to be the most powerful member of their clan. In practice this is seldom true. The decisions of the Inner Circle are enforced by the Justicar's. These are appointed by a consensus of Circle members and there is one for each of the seven main clans. They hold many powers including the rite to call Conclaves and most importantly the right to call blood hunts on Princes. The Justicars are further served by the Archons, the Justicars personal spies/staff. They are held in much fear by most Kindred, due to their power of being able to recommend a blood hunt to their Justicar.
The Camarilla works to uphold the Masquerade and clamps down hard on any who break it. It was they who saved the Kindred from the Inquisition. They introduced new knowledge and arts to the Kine and created the Renaissance. This trend towards science lead people away from the supernatural and allowed the Vampire to fade back into myth.

The Sabbat
The Sabbat unlike the Camarilla, rejects the notion that vampires should seek to be as Human as possible. It believes that only through exceptance of ones state can the Kindred flourish. It also believes strongly in the rights of the individual. Although there is a definite structure in the sect, unless a direct order has been given, members have almost total freedom. The Sect is organised not as a council but as a dictatorship. The leader of the clan is known as the Regent, and has almost total power. She is supported by the lesser ranks that tend to be known by Catholic Church titles (an affect of the strong LaSombra presence).
The sect is made up mainly of LaSombra and Tzimisce. These tend to be different from their non-anarch counter-parts. The Tzimisce are less interested in Old World power, and more in intrigue. The LaSombra tend towards conquistadors rather than Churchmen. They are also joined by members of the Antitribu of many clans. Completing this group is the Black Hand. A para-military organisation composed of handpicked members of the clans. It is the dark and mysterious militant wing of the Sabbat. It is rumoured to be heavily made up of Nagaraja (who feel let down by the Camarilla) and perhaps at high levels True Brujah.
The Sabbat also strongly believes in Gehenna10 and acts to ensure their continued survival. The Camarilla strongly denies Gehenna, and is indeed publicly sceptical about the existence of Antediluvians.

The Inconnu
The Inconnu first came into existence as the ruling council of Rome. From there they directed the affairs of the Empire, and masterminded the fall of Carthage. However as the subversion of the Baali became apparent the group began to fracture. This led in the end to the fall of the Empire. The group lost all-purpose until the rise of the Tremere. The sudden rise of this clan and the way it turned the other clans against the Salubri worried many elder Kindred. However it was not until the actions of the Giovanni that the group took on the form it now holds.
It is a sect for the Ancients. Those of at least three centuries and also those who stand little distance from the blood of Caine (minimum exceptance: 6th Generation). It only has two rules: No diabolism, and most importantly No involvement in the Jyhad. The sect requires members to distance themselves from the rest of the Cainites. This tends to suit its members, who begin to fear that they are becoming targets for the Amaranth.

From The Convention of Thorns to the Present.
The years of the Renaissance saw a cease in the Inquisition, but an increase in Kindred hostilities. The Camarilla and Sabbat waged war on each other, the Sabbat slowly losing. It was driven north to Norway then finally passed into the West. The New World offered them land and allowed all clans expansion. The Sabbat moved there and was followed by all the clans. It became a huge battleground for the Embraced.
In 1528 the primogen of the Camarilla met Claudius Giovanni (Augustus's right hand man) for a ten nightlong session of talks. At the end of them an agreement was reached that would become known as "The Promise". The Giovanni would take no part in Kindred affairs and under no circumstances play the Jyhad. To ensure their compliance the High Council would meet every 13 years in Venice for the Grand Conclave, allowing the Camarilla to keep an eye on the Necromancers. The Camarilla also agreed to officially recognise the Giovanni as a clan.
In 1600 the Seraphim came into being. This bloodline originated in a mad Gargoyle, by the name of Gabrielle. He had become infected by the curse/blessing of Vicissitude11 and after an encounter with the Baali became convinced he was a Devil. This offshoot bloodline swings between believing that they are the Demons of Satan and that they are the Angles of God. They normally settle for destroying anyone they encounter. Luckily only one of each generation in their bloodline can sire childer.
Around the middle of the 18th Century another bloodline came into existence: the Samedi. A young Giovanni, by the name of Antonio, was performing vile necromantic experiments. He was attempting to transfer the life force of a human into the body of a vampire that was on the verge of the Final Death. The experiment went hideously wrong and the vampiric corpse before him began to mutate. The end result looked much like a zombie- decayed and graceless, however it was Kindred in nature. Thus the first Samedi (Baron Samedi) was created. Antonio tried to imprison him, but he escaped (after draining Antonio) and fled into the world. His bloodline remained small but it has become concentrated in the Voodoo ridden Jamaican islands. They Samedi are less a danger to other Kindred, and more an embarrassment.
1911 saw the start of what was to be known as the 2nd Anarch Rebellion, although it was really an internal conflict among the Sabbat. It only lasted nine years but was very damaging to the sect. One result was the formation of a new bloodline: the Panders. A group of Caitiff, led by Joseph Pander, demanded exceptance by the Sabbat as a clan. This was eventually granted much to the LaSombra's disgust.
1960 saw a new Bloodline - the Serpents of the Light. A breakaway group of the Setites which have chosen to join the Sabbat.

The Clans and their Founders today.
The 20th Century has seen the Kindred spread across the globe. We are now present on every continent, except Antarctica. We are behind mortal governments everywhere. Their history is a reaction to ours. We have become a necessary part in their civilisation. However today the Clans are ruled by many not just the few.
Absimilliard has not been seen since the fall of the Second City. Whether any in the Nosferatu have heard from him is not known. His clan has spread across the world, finding a special place in Arabia. They are the gathers of much information and use it to their own advantage.
Arkiel is said to still exist, and her clan certainly continues to flourish. The Toreador are the artists of the world. They can be found wherever there is beauty and are becoming increasingly influential in the affairs of the Camarilla. There is little ill will between the Toreador and their antitribu.
Brujah was, of course, slain in the fall of the Second City. There are doubts as to whether his killer Troile still exists. The clan today is a directionless rabble of rebels. What little cohesion they did have has been destroyed by the fall of the USSR (and the growth of some new horror).
Cappadocius was slain by Augustus Giovanni. However it is said that his spirit returned to guide the Nagaraja, thus leaning them more towards the spirit world than the resurrection of corpses.
Ennouia still survives, and it is claimed that she still actively looks out for the interests of her Childer. The Gangrel are being pushed backed increasingly in this day and age, as the wildernesses are being destroyed. This has put the clan in conflict with the Garou, now more than ever. It should be noted that a closeness still exists between the Gangrel and the wandering Gypsies.
The Giovanni family flourishes in today's world. Where the Venture gather political power, the Giovanni seeks commercial wealth. Based in the City of Necromancers (Venice) they rule a powerful business empire and are soon approaching the point where they will be able to demand a ruling seat on the Camarilla Council.
Of Haquim virtually nothing is known. His legacy has made itself very visible however. The Assamite clan, known for its skill at assassination. Although it is no longer the threat it was during the years of the Anarch Revolt (due to the curse of the Tremere) the clan is still open for business. It is fairly commonplace for Elders to hire Assamite assassins to kill a rival. It should be noted that if a victim survives an attempt and kills his attacker, he is protected from any further attempts by the clan (the vampire is judged "worthy" of living). The clan operates out of a fortress hidden in the Arabian mountains: Alamut. (It is rumoured that the clan is becoming increasingly active in the Far East, where the curse of the Tremere is not in effect).
Malkav is also thought to still be alive, but has deserted his clan. Their madness has always limited them, and they are a weak force in the world. The only difference between them and their antitribu is that one group tends towards more violent derangement's.
Nothing has been heard of Sargatanas for a long time (pre Rome). His clan has never risen to prominence and take little part in Kindred affairs. They still travel with the Gypsy and lead a supposedly free life.
The Shadow was a victim of the Amaranth during the Anarch revolt. Since then his clan has become heavily involved in the Sabbat. They are the driving force behind many of its actions. The LaSombra who didn't join the Sabbat still wield power in Spain, and maintain a presence in the Roman Catholic Church.
Saulot was diableised by Tremere in that clans rise to power. The Salubri has been driven to the brink of extinction, thanks to the Tremere's war of propaganda. Few Kindred today know the truth behind this strange clan. The few remaining Salubri tend to be members of the Inconnu.
Set is almost certainly sleeping in a long forgotten tomb of an Egyptian Pharaoh. His clan have spread out into the world, spreading lies and deception wherever they go. They are heavily involved in drugs trafficking and are despised Kindred all over the globe. They are said to be hunted by the mysterious Children of Osiris.
Tremere almost certainly still exists. His bloodline has flourished into the second strongest clan in the Camarilla. It has taken its place among the leaders of our world. It is also a clan rightly feared by many others. Relations are tense between the Tremere and the Gangrel, and openly hostile between them and the Tzimisce and the Gargoyles. They pursue a policy of killing their Antitribu on sight (the Antitribu make up the House of Goratrix, and are detectable by any Magick wielder on sight).
Tzimisce was slain in the Anarch Revolt and his clan has become divided in his absence. On one hand the traditionalists remain in Transilvania ruling small peasant villages. On the other, there is the large group of Fiends in the Sabbat. Ruling behind the scenes these dark Kindred have given the Sabbat many of its rituals and are a power to be reckoned with.
Veddartha did not survive past the Fifth Century. A group of True Brujah tracked him down in England, and in recompense for Carthage slew him. This has not stopped the Ventrue going on to become the rulers of our kind. There is nowhere that there is not a Ventrue on the ruling Primogen if not being the actual Prince. The are the glue that holds the Camarilla together and the rulers of Europe.
The Kindred could well carry on with the Kine in our present state for centuries. As their population expands so does ours. Stories of Gehenna worry some among us, but there is no real evidence. If there are any Kindred alive today who existed 2300 years ago then they are not admitting to it. This is hardly surprising: they are probably in real danger of diablerie and would spend large periods in torpor. Just because none claim to be of this age does not mean Gehenna is real. After all there are a lot of the Fourth generation left in the world, if they were all exterminated but one for each clan, the 3rd have indeed been busy repopulating.

1 This flood corresponds to the Hebrew 'Noah's Ark' and the Greek Flood of Retribution.
2 Although there was no record of the name of the Second City, several scholars (myself included) believe that it was the northern Egyptian City of Tanis. It was destroyed by a sandstorm in 987 BC, which would tie in with the fall of the Second Generation. It is rumoured among the kine that Tanis was the final resting-place of the Ark of the Covenant. No such item is included in our history, however the Setities do search for the City, perhaps they know something the rest of us don't.
3 It is said by some that Ba'al was slain, however this would not account for the Indian death cult associated with him.
4 Shaitain is a member of the fourth generation and the progeny of Saulot (progeny of Khayman). When Saulot left the Second City, Shaitain spent a large amount of time with Ba'al. Ba'al introduced him to Demon Worship and Shaitain found himself suited to it. He quickly gained in power (through numerous diabolic pacts) and he left the Second City before its fall. He took control of a small town and guided it towards cityhood. It was called "Kala-At-Shergat". Here he increased his own power but kept his black arts hidden from the kine. It is interesting to note that he never sired progeny (nor to our knowledge since then). He was accepted into the ranks of the Baali after the fall of Kala-At-Shergat and has since been one of their leading members (he doesn't suffer the aversion to crosses that most Baali experience). A long-standing death warrant has been served on Shaitain by the Camarilla (it is renewed by each Justicar which takes office); he is also said to be hunted by the Inquisition of the Sabbat as well as the Sabbat's Black Hand.
5 Also known as Sutekh
6 Also called Wen-Nefer
7 It is said the Innconu was aided by a group of Magi, who ringed the city with salt, to prevent the Kindred escaping
8 The Children of the Darkness were a group of Kindred, from several clans, who believed that the Embraced were the agents of Satan. They lived in graveyards, held Black Sabbats and spread terror among the Kine. It is important to note that, unlike the Baali, they never engaged in demon worship. Their leader was a powerful member of the Tremere called Santino. His current whereabouts is unknown, but he is believed to still exist.
9 Ghouls are mortals that have been exposed to Kindred blood, and gain some empowerment from it. They are not generally classed as Awakened. However when a group of Ghouls breed together over several generations, the traits and powers of the Ghouls can become natural, no longer requiring the vitae of Kindred. These families were commonly employed by several Clans from the Tenth Century onwards.
10 Gehenna is a prophesised occurrence, a kind of vampiric Judgement day. On this day the Third Generation is meant to arise from torpor and feast upon the Kindred of the world. There is no real evidence to back this up, but those who believe say that the signs herald its imminent arrival
11 Vicissitude, is a discipline amongst the Tzimisce. It allows radical altering of form in both themselves and others. The Fiends have gained a reputation as tortures through their less than moral uses of this power. It is considered a vampiric disease, as only Kindred exposed to Tzimisce blood can use the discipline. It also has the unfortunate affect of driving many of its no-tzimisce users insane.
