Winter Gardening As you survey your garden, you might not think there is tons of work to be done. Your vegetables and annuals might be dying back, or things might simply refuse to grow. But the winter garden still demands the our attention.
Winter gardens can be very beautiful. Even if your area has a powerful frost, as mine does, there are still many plants that will thrive and even bloom during these cold and icy months. And there is still much work to be done. Here are a few tips to keep you busy.
Weeding ~ the rains encourage weedy growth, and they really get out of hand when its too stormy to go outside. So if you get the oppurtunity, tackle those weeds!
Improvements ~ This is a great time to year to make improvements on your garden; add new beds or paths, expand, build arbors or other such structures, or put in a birdbath, house or feeder.
Construct Sacred Space ~ create an altar or circle within your garden if you have the space. These are great for outdoor rituals!
Outdoor Christmas Tree ~ Plant a baby christmas tree or keep one potted outdoors. Decorate it with natural treats the birds will love, like fruity garlands of berries or popcorn, or smear pine cones with peanut butter and dip them in seeds and hang them on the branches.
Bulbs ~ Now's your chance to plant bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, crocus and hyacinth in your garden for lovely blooms in the spring that will naturalize and return year after year!
