MACARONI and CHEESE
1-3/4 cups macaroni
6 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1 medium onion, chopped
3-6 tablespoons butter or margarine pats
4 cups milk* *This is an approximate measure. Prepare macaroni according to maker's instructions; drain well. Remember to reduce cooking time of macaroni by approximately 2 minutes since further cooking will occur. Preheat oven to 350°. In a lightly greased 1-1/2 quart oven-safe bowl place about 1/4 of the cooked macaroni. Add a layer of 1/3 of the cheese, onion and butter or margarine pats on top of the macaroni. Add another layer of macaroni and repeat until ingredients are used up, finishing with a top layer of macaroni. Pour in enough milk to just cover the mixture. Bake uncovered 45 to 50 minutes. Remove from oven and cover. Allow to stand 5 minutes before serving. Notebook...Add some sliced fully-cooked sausage links or wieners to the layers if desired.
