~Brian’s point of view~
Nick had gone out with Carmen, and Michelle and Cassie were on the deck getting tans. So instead of watching them slowly burn under the hot sun, I decided to see what August was doing.
It was weird. I had just wanted to spend as much time with her as possible. And what did I know about her?
“Hi, is August here?” I asked when some little boy answered the door.
“Yeah,” he turned and shouted, “AUGUST! Your boyfriend's here!”
“Shut-up, you little…” she came to the door. “Oh, hi.” Her race turned slightly red. “Sorry about my annoying little brother.”
“No problem. Hey, everyone else is doing something... so I was wondering if you wanted to get some breakfast.”
“Um… sure, that’d be great. Be right back.” She went in to grab her purse.
“Nick’s out with Carmen. He’s already going on and on about her, and he doesn’t even know her. It’s hilarious. But of course, he does this with every girl.”
“I'm not surprised. Is that what you do?”
“No. He moves to fast. You need to take the time to get to know a person first.”
“But what if you don’t have a lot of time?” she asked, then bit her lip.
I shrugged. “Then where’s it going to go anyway?”
“Yeah, I guess your right.”
We arrived at ‘Triton’s’ while the breakfast buffet was still up and got some food.
“So did you guys have fun last night? Your girls night out thing, I mean.”
“Yeah. I taught Michelle the dance to ‘Its Gonna Be Me’ and we went to the Teen Club to get drinks. We saw AJ and Kevin there.”
I nodded. “Michelle was saying something about Kevin and that party.”
“Yeah, he asked her to it. She was so excited!”
“Really? That’s cool. Are you going?”
She shrugged. “I haven’t decided yet. It sounds okay but… I don’t know…”
“You should go. It’ll be fun.” If she’d just go then I wouldn’t have to ask her.
And then I couldn't get rejected.
“Eh… maybe.”
“Yeah. I mean, you’ve gotten to know everyone now. And you’re acting more like yourself…”
“Really? And how do you figure that?” she smiled inquisitively.
I hadn’t spent the last few days gazing into her eyes and gotten nothing out of it. Her eyes contained the secrets of her soul.
And anyone who could learn those secrets could die a happy man.
“Your eyes give it away. Admit it, you love my group,” I said simply, with a grin.
“You're getting full of yourself. You better watch it, you're turning into Nick.” Her eyes sparkled with humor.
“Ouch, I didn’t think there was a woman of cruelty under the shy exterior,” I put my hand over my heart, acting hurt.
After breakfast we took a walk around and talked. One of those conversations that covered everything.
From school to teachers. Friends to past times. Music to art. Movies to Nintendo games.
Even by the end of the conversation of every random topic I wasn’t bored. I could listen to her talk the rest of the day.
“Well, I’ve gotta go. I’m supposed to meet the girls in a little while. I’ll see ya later?”
“Yeah… later... oh, that reminds me... Nick wanted to know if I wanted to see a movie with him and Carmen tonight. And I don’t wanna be hanging out with a couple tonight by myself, so… do you want to come?”
Okay. That wasn’t exactly true. But I just wanted to see her more today. Who could blame me for that?
“Sure,” her face brightened.
“Great. Meet me outside the movie theater at 7?”
August nodded. “Bye.”
~Nick’s point of view~
“This is really good…” Carmen took a bite of an omelet.
“Yeah. Disney chefs must know their food,” I agreed. “Did you have fun last night?”
Carmen nodded. “They are all so incredibly nice! Michelle was so funny trying to learn the dance. And August and I walked back to our rooms together. She’s so cute whenever I mention Brian.”
“Why? Does she like him or something?”
“Isn't it obvious?”
I smiled. One step closer.
“I hope Howie or whoever that guy is asks Cassie to the dance. And Michelle was so happy when Kevin asked her.”
I had just taken a bite of sausage and choked on it accidentally.
“Are you okay?”
I coughed a little more but finally managed, “the sausage just didn’t go down all the way.” We laughed.
“Anyway, the dance sounds like a lot of fun.”
What was she hinting at? She was going with me… right? “Yeah, we’ll have a lot of fun.”
“Oh. Are we going together?” she asked, innocently.
“Well I assumed…”
“But you never know unless you ask,” she said confidently.
Oops. I guess I’d forgotten an important step. “Alright, fine. Do you want to go with me to the dance?”
“I’d love to, Nick.”
I smiled, relieved. Although there was never any doubt.
