Basic Flamenco
This course covers the following material:
**Basic flamenco rhythms
**Using palmas as an instrument in flamenco music
**Basic Beginner footwork and castenet technique
**The grace and beauty of the arm movements, and how to achieve and maintain the proper posture
**Choreographies taught:
Sevillanas: | The traditional partner dance of Seville; |

Rumba: | One of the 4-count Ida y Vuelta dances, a familiar mixture of new-and old-world rhythms. |
Instruction is bilingual (English/Spanish>, and includes additional lectures and audio-visual supplementary materials on the theory and culture of Andalusian gypsy culture, song, and dance. Gloria accompanies the choreographies with singing, to give the students an authentic feel for the cante. The melodies and percussive rhythms are stressed and demonstrated through the use of taped music, live music, singing by the teacher to demonstrate the emotion of the cante, and palmas.
Intermediate Flamenco
This course covers the following material:
**More complex 12-count flamenco rhythms
**Intermediate palmas, including contratiempo techniques
**Advanced footwork and castenet technique
**Incorporating the entire body with more complex arm movements
**Working on proper body placement and positions (estampa)
**Choreographies taught:
Alegrias: | An upbeat 12-count rhythm |

Bulerias: | Auténtico de Jerez |
Instruction is bilingual (English/Spanish), and includes additional lecuteres and audio-visual supplementary materials on the theory and culture of Andalusian gypsy culture, song, and dance. Gloria accompanies the choreographies with singing, to give the students an authentic feel for the cante. The use of additional elements in choreographies (shawls, fans, hats) is introduced.
Advanced Flamenco
This course covers the following material:
**Concentrated on choreographies, with technical instruction used for warm-up only
**Advanced palmas, including using palmas by instinct, and not by counting; keeping the rhythm for fellow classmates to dance to; and dancing to palmas only
**Advanced footwork combinations incorporated into full-length choreographies;
**Advanced castenet rhythms
**Incorporating castenets, fans, and shawls in choreographies
**Authentic and contemporary costuming
**Emphasis on proper body placement and positions (estampa)
**Choreographies taught:
Seguirillas: | A serious 5-count cante jondo, or deep song |

Soleares: | The mother of all flamenco rhythms |
Instruction is bilingual (English/Spanish), and includes additional lectures and audio-visual supplementary materials on the theory and culture of Andalusian gypsy culture, song, and dance. Taped music is used, to increase the students' exposure to a wide variety of flamenco artists. Students are expected to be self-motivated and to pick up combinations and rhythms quickly, and to begin joining in with the jaleo and cante. Interpretation and expression is emphasized and developed, as each student takes the choreography and makes it his or her own.
