REFORMA DC Metro Area Chapter
West End Neighborhood Library Center
Minutes for Meeting on March 5, 2001 3:00-5:00pm

Members Present: Mario A. Ascencio, Rachel Schneiderman, Elissa Miller, Elena Tscherny, Nucky Walder (Guest), Maria Elisa Martinez, and Maria Diaz.

I. Introductions

A. We all introduced ourselves. Maria Diaz, a student from the University of Maryland College Park, attended her first REFORMA meeting. Elena invited Ms. Nucky Walder from Teatro de la Luna as a guest to our meeting.

II. National Poetry Month

A. National Poetry Month is in April. Elena has been working this past year to host two poetry marathons at the Martin Luther King Memorial Library. The first poetry marathon for adults will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2001 (11:00am-5:00pm). We discussed the possibility of inviting Piri Thomas to the event. This would have to be in collaboration with another library system. The second poetry marathon is for children and will take place on Friday, April 27, 2001 (9:30am-1pm). These events are “open mic” and everyone is welcome to read. We discussed about the possibility of having a half-hour in the adult marathon for REFORMA members to read.

III. REFORMA Book Fair at Arlington County Public Library

A. Thanks to Elissa the book fair was a great success. The book fair allowed librarians from the area to meet Spanish language vendors as well as to place orders for books. Although some libraries did not place purchase orders on the spot, they took lists and purchased them later. One librarian drove from North Carolina just for the book fair. We also had one librarian from Dallas, Texas attend the book fair, but he was here for ALA Midwinter, which started the next day. Vendors paid $50.00 to participate in the book fair. This paid for the attendees’ lunch.

B. Elissa wrote thank you letters to all vendors while Mario wrote a thank you letter (email) on behalf of the Chapter to the director of the library for their support of REFORMA and the growing Spanish Speaking communities in this area.

IV. REFORMA Survey

A. Mario presented a survey that he has been working on for our members to fill out. It is a work in progress and is designed to gather information about members. A group not yet assigned will look at the document and make final changes. If you would like to participate in shaping this document contact Mario.

V. @ your library campaign

A. Mario informed the members that a resolution was passed at ALA Midwinter to translate ALA’s “@ your library campaign.” So far the translation is going well, but ALA is having problems with translating the “@” symbol. They feel that it is part of the slogan and too valuable to give up in the Spanish translation. Unfortunately the “@” symbol doesn’t translate as “en” in Spanish. Different ideas have been shared on the REFORMA Board of Directors’ listserv as to how to deal with the issue.

B. Elena mentioned that DCPL also wanted to use the slogan, but did not know how to translate the “@” symbol either. They too want to use the “@” in their slogan. Elissa mentioned that Arlington County Publc Library would be working with the slogan and might run into the same problem in the future if ALA doesn’t resolve soon.

VI. Comprehensive Program

A. Elena suggested that at our next meeting (May 7) we all bring our proposed programs for Hispanic Heritage Month (2001) and create one calendar of programs. The information could also go on our Web page and diceminated on various listservs.

VII. Chapter Web page

A. Mario informed the members that the Web page that he created for the Chapter has not been completed. To visit the Web page go to https://www.angelfire.com/va2/reformametro/. If you would like to assist with the Web page, please contact Mario.

VIII. REFORMA 30th Anniversary

A. Mario informed everyone that Arnolfo Trejo, founder of REFORMA in 1971, will be made an honorary member of ALA. This is ALA’s highest recognition for its members. If you are planning to attend ALA in San Francisco, try to attend the event were Mr. Trejo will be honored. There is more information being passed on the REFORMAnet.

IX. Book Distribution program by the Mexican Embassy

A. Elena informed the group that the Mexican Embassy is looking for public libraries and schools that serve children of Mexican descent to receive books in Spanish. The books are free, but libraries and schools must pay for postage from Texas. For more information, please contact Ms. Adriana Becerra at the Mexican Embassy (202)736-1005.

X. REFORMA Officers

A. It has been a year since the current officers took the positions. Elissa has agreed to continual serving in her capacity as Vice-President; Maria Elisa also agreed to continue serving as Treasurer, and Mario agreed to continue serving as President.

XI. Student Membership Outreach

A. The members discussed the possibility of hosting a brown bag at the two local library and information schools sometime in the fall when the new school year begins.

B. Mario also suggested having a REFORMA representative at orientation to introduce the newest students to the organization. This is only an option if the schools invite professional organizations to their orientations.

XII. Next Meeting

A. Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 7, 2001 at 3:00pm. It would be good to have the meeting at a different venue, such as the library and information school at the University of Maryland, College Park, but getting to the school may be a problem. The West End Library seemed to work for the group, but other suggestions are welcomed at least until mid April.

XIII. Announcements

Meeting Adjourned at 4:45pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Mario A. Ascencio,
DC Metro Area Chapter President
