The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra- A Discussion on Religion in the Twenty-first Century

This is a series of discussions on the Lotus Sutra between SGI President Ikeda and Soka Gakkai Study Department Chief Katsuji Saito and Vice Chiefs Takanori Endo and Haruo Suda. It was first serialised in Japanese in the Daibyakurenge, the Soka Gakkai study journal, between 1995 and 2000. Translations in English followed in the SGI Newsletter, and were reprinted in SGI journals around the world.

"...the Lotus Sutra is an amazing scripture. It tells us how profound and infinite the Buddha's wisdom is--that enlightenment is not something that can be grasped as an intellectual concept, that it cannot be fully expressed in words. While praising the Buddha's wisdom in this way, it also declares that the purpose of the Buddha's appearance in the world is to make this ineffable wisdom accessible to all beings and enable them to attain enlightenment. The Lotus Sutra also emphasizes that it is expounded for this reason, and that all who hear it will attain Buddhahood without fail. The sutra states again and again that, even after the Buddha's death, a person who hears the Lotus Sutra and commits so much as a single phrase or verse to memory will, without fail, attain Buddhahood." (Daisaku Ikeda, Part 5)

...but what the sutra does not make clear is when or how all of us will attain enlightenment. In this point lies the true power of the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin--by sincerely chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the Gohonzon each of us can instantly attain the "wisdom of all Buddhas" every day.

This series of discussions encompasses an amazing variety of topics; from
