The morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001 is one few will forget. Most will remember what they were doing when the attacks on our great nation began.

Our hearts go out to those who have been affected by this terrible tragedy.

Many have been wondering, "what can I do?" Even those of us who are disabled have the ability to "do" something that will make a difference. Differences don't have to be large or small, as long as we make a positive influence.

There has been an overwhelming outpouring of support of materials, foods and supplies. Many of the charities are now asking for monetary donations so that they will be able to obtain the necessary supplies that run out or so that once the immediate shock is over and the outpouring turns to a trickle that they still have the resources to help the many thousands who have been directly affected by this tragedy. On the above websites you can make monetary donations either by credit card or check by mail.

For those who want to donate blood, the Red Cross recommends to call for an appointment. This is something that can be done at any time. Not just in the immediate post disaster phase. Please remember if you are able to donate blood, it is a precious gift that you can give at any time, and more than once. The blood components are used for many life saving treatments.

Another thing that many have been doing is praying. Praying for the injured, the missing and their families, and for all of the United States. That is one donation you can make that won't cost you more than a moment of your time. Pray for those who are suffering now and those who will have many difficult times ahead.

A movement has been started like that from Desert Storm. During Desert Storm we tied yellow ribbons anywhere we could. Now the movement is to tie purple ribbons the same way. This is for two reasons:
1. In remembrance of not only the firefighters, police officers, paramedics who have died, but also for all who have died in this terrible tragedy.
2. Just as in the military, when a serviceman is injured, he is awarded the Purple Heart .Our country has been injured. Let's award it with purple or red/white/blue ribbons.

Those who live in the immediate disaster areas of lower Manhattan and the Pentagon there are some precautions you can take, especially those with respiratory problems:

Please do not assume that all of Middle Eastern, Southwest Asian descent are terrorists. That would be like condemning all white individuals for the actions of the Oklahoma City bomber. True followers of Islam are peace loving people. Many are Americans like many of us. They have the difficult position of having certain physical characteristics and cultural standards typical to their heritage and being Americans loyal to the USA. Do not hold them responsible for the actions of the terrorists. In attacking them that makes the attacker no better than the terrorist action that precipitated this horrible tragedy.
