First Troop Meeting is Monday, September 10

This first meeting is a planning meeting/Court of Awards. The first hour we will plan the upcoming year as well as do some long range planning. There are only three years left of scouting so what do you want to do with them. The last 30 minutes will be a Court of Awards and Investiture for Kristin. Girls are asked to wear uniforms (old or new) and vest. Parents are welcome to stay for the whole meeting, the last 30 minutes, or just pick up at 8:30. The meeting location is Waples Mill Elementary, the same pod, from 7:00 to 8:30..

Please refer to your August letter in regards to paperwork/money that is due at this meeting. If you have not registered and do not intend on returning to scouts please let Mrs. Davis know by the September 10 meeting.

Tracking to Gold

All the work the troop can do as a whole was completed last year. Each scout knows what she did and did not do (of course it is recorded in their Gold Notebook). Also in the notebook is all the outside “stuff” (not with the troop) completed. If you want to review your progress with Mrs. Davis let her know whether you would like to come early to the September 10 meeting or stay late to go over it. There won’t be any time during the meeting.  Once the application is submitted to GSCNC it can take as much as 6 – 8 weeks for it to get approved (hopefully much less) and ONLY THEN can you start the clock on the 50 hour. Any work before approval does not count in the 50 hours (refer to the book you got at the gold Award Workshop).

For the record I have the following prerequisites completed (that is the paperwork has been turned in to Mrs. Davis):

Ø      Senior Challenge – Tracy and Amy (for those not on this list you may (or still need to) have brought in your notebook and mural but not submitted the form)

Ø      Leadership Pin – Mallary, Tracy, Amy, Katherine and Alex

Ø      Career Exploration- Mallary, Tracy, Amy, Alex, Katherine, Lauren, Stephanie, Lucy, and Corianne

Ø      4 Interest Projects as a Senior – Mallary, Amy, Tracy, Lauren, Katherine, Corianne, Lucy and Alex (assuming you completed the bird house for the Habitat workshop you went to in April)

Some of you are so close.

Girls, I cannot impress on you more the importance of getting this done and out of the way NOW, which is why we started freshmen year with the prerequisites. It is up to you to track all the work and get it signed off. The leaders will not be doing any more work toward the prerequisites. In fact we don’t even know who is really going to “Go for the Gold” so we won’t nag. The leaders are here to help but only where help is requested.

Gold Award Workshop

For those that haven’t been and are near completion, or those that have been and need help finding a project, you might want to attend the workshop. It is Sunday, September 9 from 2 – 5 pm at the McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Drive. This is for scouts and parents. There will be a representative from the Gold Award Panel who can help you get over the problem of finding a project that you will want to do. To register call Kim Gibson at 703 356-6337 or kgibson@erols.com.

Kaleidoscope

A new book for 2001-2003 will hopefully be available for distribution at the September 10 meeting. Each scout will get her own copy. The forms in this book are the only ones that will be accepted by GSCNC after October 1. For anyone who completed their Silver Trefoil requirements over the summer, you may want to get that form to Mrs. Davis in September or use the new form after October 1.

Think about these events for the upcoming planning meeting. Some of them require commitments as early as end of September.
