Next Meeting Monday, January 22

Mrs. Tatariw has a friend who will help us with the Creative Cooking IP. The meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Susan Stambules who has all kinds of kitchen gadgets to inspire you to cook. A permission slip has been mailed to you and needs to be returned by January 19 (faxed permission slips to Susan are acceptable (703 620-3676). Mrs. Stambules lives at 2898 Franklin Oaks Drive. which is off West Ox Road (the section between the Fairfax County Parkway and Lawyers Road). Franklin Oaks Drive is a semi circle and her house is about ½ way around. It will be the normal meeting time of 7 – 8:30 p.m.

For Amy, Katherine, Lucy and Corianne, who went gleaning, this will complete the IP. If Gina, Tracy, Alex, and Lauren attend this meeting they will just need to do the service project on their own. Mallary and Stephanie need the service project and another selection of their choice.

Great Job

The ellipse sing was a success. Mrs. Irvin and Mrs. Davis have gotten a lot of positive feedback from other leaders. They were very impressed with the leadership. Also special congratulations to Corinne and Lucy for volunteering to sing the verse of We Change the World. Despite the threatening winter weather, there were people in the audience beside parents. The patches are beautiful but big. It will take up about as much room as the square patch from Savannah.

Spring Meetings

With the Senior Challenge in February we as a troop have fulfilled all the Gold prerequisites that the troop can do. We did the career fair for the Career pin, the first 3 parts of the Senior Challenge (the last 2 must be done individually), and 4 interest projects (Just Jewelry; Poll, Paddle & Roll (we will do the last part this spring so that is not finished), Creative Cooking and Self Defense (February 24). The Leadership Pin is also an individual activity. This is what Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Irvin said they would do in the fall so now it is time to concentrate on Cabana. Except when we do the last step of Pole, Paddle & Roll, most of the spring meetings will be devoted to Cabana planning. The girls not going to Cabana are welcome to every meeting but obviously are not required to attend. There will continue to be regular newsletters to keep everyone informed of opportunities and such. Mrs. Davis is always available to advise girls on the prerequisites they still need to complete.

Inauguration

Got a message on Wednesday that we are definitely in but they haven’t made our assignment yet. Not every troop got in so we are lucky. I have the “beautiful” yellow blazers that need to be picked up at Mrs. Davis’ house as soon as possible. To make it easier for everyone the blazers are in a plastic container at the Davis’ door. Each bag will be marked with the scout’s name. The pin everyone ordered will be in the bag with the jacket. You can drop off anything (Cabana deposit, permission slips, etc.) in the box. I will let you know as soon as I get the assignment and times we will be working. Keep all day January 20 open and think about what you will wear if it is cold. Anything you bring has to stay with you, as there will be no place to store items. They also recommend a disposable camera if you want to take pictures.

Cookies

Hope cookie sales are going well. I have heard some girls are doing well. The initial orders are due to Mrs. Sullivan on January 22. If you can’t make the meeting then please call Mrs. Sullivan to arrange to drop the form off at her house.

Cookie Booths

We need a volunteer for cookie booth coordinator. At the 7:00 on February 13 (right before the next Service Unit Meeting) troops can sign up for spots. We need a parent to coordinate this effort. The girls have done well in the past few years. Please email or call Susan Davis today and volunteer.

Cabana

A letter was mailed today (Friday) to everyone participating. Please take action on it immediately.

Brownie Try-it Fundraiser

Mrs. Irvin is organizing a Brownie try-day where we will charge to do the try-it. She is currently asking Brownie leaders how much interest there might be and trying to get an idea of what try-its are in demand. This fundraiser is for those going to Cabana who still need to earn some money. The Cabana letter tells you how much is in your account. This will also help earn money needed for the leader travel fund. We need a couple girls to pull this off successfully and so far troop response has been low.  There are no other fundraisers planned for the rest of the year (besides cookies) so more ideas and assistance is welcome.

Ink Jet Cartridge Fundraiser

Yes, Mrs. Tatariw is still collecting ink cartridges for a refund of $2.00 a piece. If you have any bring them to the January 22 meeting in a plastic bag with the scouts name somewhere in/on the bag. Any questions contact her directly at tatco@tidalwave.net or 703 716-1176.

Self Defense IP

As I put out in an earlier email the workshop is Saturday, February 24 at the Vienna Presbyterian Church (on Park Street in Vienna). Girls need to arrive about 8:30 and can be picked up at 2:10. Girls need to bring a sack lunch and drink (water will be available), and should dress in athletic clothing and sneakers. The cost is $2.00 and has been deducted from each girls account. In addition to the troop permission slip there will be a permission slip from the Vienna Police that will be distributed in February.

This workshop is being conducted by the Vienna Police department and is geared to high school age girls. It is a high risk and sensitive issues activity so both blocks need to be initialed on the permission slip. Topics will include (but are not limited to): date rape, dating violence, self-esteem/body image, and alcohol and drug usage. A video will be shown at the workshop that depicts a date rape and shows underage alcohol consumption. If parents decide they don’t want their daughters to attend let Mrs. Davis know by January 16 so she can credit the $2.00 back to the scouts account. After that the fee is non-refundable. Also there is a waiting list for this event so someone will use the slot.

The entire IP will be covered except the service project. It would be helpful if someone would volunteer to do the service project with the troop, as the leaders don’t have the time to plan it right now.

  Senior Challenge

The Senior Challenge (or the first 3 steps) will be Saturday, February 17 at Vienna Presbyterian Church (yes the same one where the Self Defense Workshop will be held on the 24th). Girls need to arrive not later than 8:30 and can be picked up at 1. Eat a good breakfast, as only a snack will be served about midway thru the event. Girls are to bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope and dress in comfortable clothes, as they may be sitting on the floor at times.

Camp Forms

Mrs. Davis has the camp (both overnight and day) brochures. She will put them with the inaugural jackets for those participating in that event. For everyone not going to the inauguration, their camp brochures will be in the same plastic box with the jackets. There is also information on being a program aide at Ashgrove and Firefly. However girls can look through the day camp brochure and contact the person in charge if they want to work as an aide at another camp.

Patch Design

I know most, if not all, of you are taking World Civilization in school. Well by now you should have studied the Egyptians. The theme for Ashgrove is “Walk Like an Egyptian” and the organizers are looking for patch designs. If you are interested: 1) the design should depict the theme, 2) be drawn in a 5 inch circle, 3) not more than 6 colors (not counting the background), and 4) include the words “Ashgrove Adventure 2001”. All entries must be drawn, no computer designs. Mail them to Margaret Scheirer, 8456 Van Court, Annandale, VA 22003 not later than March 8.
