Thank-you

Mrs. Irvin and Mrs. Davis want to thank the group that took us out to dinner on April 29. Hopefully we will continue to have fun times for the remaining two years. For those who missed the dinner, Mrs. Irvin, Lucy Sullivan and Mrs. Davis surprised Mrs. Sullivan by awarding her the Girl Scout Outstanding Volunteer Pin for her ten years as cookie mom and loyal support to leaders. This is an award that must be approved by the Association Recognition’s Board.

Kayaking

We have a good group going: three families (Davis’, Tatariw’s and Fries’) and 5 “single” girls (Lucy, Tracy, Katherine, Kristin and Stephanie). Here are the details again:

h    June 1 from 6:00pm – 9:00pm (which means leave about 5:00pm from Waples Mill Elementary and return around 10:00pm. Bring a bag dinner if you need it.)

h    The trip will start with a lesson and equipment orientation (everyone will wear a life vest)

h    We can take a trip around the marsh or go to the mouth of the creek and see Mt. Vernon across the Potomac (but we won’t go on the Potomac) – we can decide this when we get there

h    Return to the landing before pitch black (sunset at 8:30pm that day) but for safety everyone will have a white light on their vest.

If Fries’ or Tatariw’s want to meet us at the dock I can provide directions. It is in Fort Washington, MD.

GSCNC Sing-a-long

Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Tatariw, Corianne, Tracy and Amy will help lost singers. We are registered and will each receive a songbook and patch. Our shift is 10 – 12 so we need to be at the Metro by 9:00 am.  The date again is Saturday June 8 near the Washington Monument and we will meet at the Tatariw’s at 8:30 am and go to the Metro in one car. Since the actual sing-a-long is 1:30 – 4 we will stay around for at least part of it.

Early Bird Registration

Mrs. Davis mailed or delivered registration forms to everyone. She would like them back as soon as possible but not later than June 1 with a check to the troop for $7.00 per person registered. DO NOT WRITE ON THE BACK OR IN THE GREEN/BLUE SPACES. If you are undecided, then hold your form(s) over the summer and bring it (them) to the first meeting in September. If you know you will not be returning just let Mrs. Davis know as soon as possible.

End of the Year Event

Any idea????. We really don’t have much to pass out (some patches and cookie “stuff”.  Would Monday, June 17 be good for everyone. Feedback to Mrs. Davis please by June 1.

Events for Next Year

Some girls have already approached Mrs. Davis with possible ideas for next year. We know planning is a dirty word but the guidance for leaders working with Senior Scouts is “By girls, for girls”. After this year you realize that Mrs. Irvin and Mrs. Davis are pulling back on leader planned events: a) the troop said they want less program due to busy schedules, b) you are at the age where planning is good practice, and c) you get the program you want. Three recommendations on the table are camping, a cruise (very popular with Senior Troops right now) and New York (possibly a day trip to cut down on costs). Girl planned events will require each participant to assist with the planning.

QSP

Anyone wishing to place a QSP order should get it to Mrs. Davis by Monday, May 13 as she has to turn in all orders on the 14th. If you want to order and didn’t get a packet, Mrs. Davis still has some.

Theater Arts Workshop

TOGA is sponsoring a Theater Arts Workshop at Mary Washington College November 16 – 17, 2002. Senior girls will have the opportunity to participate in workshops (make-up, costume design, stage combat, acting and stage lighting are the ones planned at this time), seminars, and attend a play. The workshops will all be hand-on with college drama students and faculty. Mrs. Davis has to make a guess on how many would like to attend at the next TOGA meeting since there is limited space and A LOT of interest. Let Mrs. Davis know if you are interested by May 13. This does not obligate you in any way. Since there will be some free time in the afternoon Mrs. Davis will arrange a college tour.

Habitat for Humanity

The all woman’s house in Fairfax needs help with landscaping on June 13 after school or June 14 after school and you don’t have to be 16 to participate. Contact Kathy Althoff at 703 255-9273 if interested. If anyone needs service hours for any reason this is for you.

Fairfax Fair

Some of you need hours for the Senior Challenge #5. This is your chance. You just need to sign up for a 2 hour shift at the fair. Admission to the fair is free and you can stay and enjoy the other activities after your shift. If interested contact Mrs. Judy Baldwin at GSCNC (jbaldwin@gscnc.org or 202 237-1670 ext 292). This is an individual vice troop event.

Need Council Hours for Silver Trefoil

Girls are needed to help at the mini-shop in Centreville. The shop hours are 10 – 4 on Mondays, 4 – 8 on Thursdays, and 9 – 1 on Saturdays. Contact Mrs. Suzanne Amsbaugh if interested (sudsgs@aol.com )

  Gold Award

If you are thinking of working on your project over the summer the paperwork must be to GSCNC by June 1. Remember you cannot start counting the 50 hours until the Gold Awards board has approved your project. Mrs. Davis will gladly review a rough which can be emailed or faxed to her.

Association Event

Mrs. Davis is chairing a large Association event on Sunday, September 29 at Bull Run Park. The event will have stations where girls can work on badges requirements, face painting, crafts, etc. All volunteers are welcome for planning or on the day of the event. For the girls this can count as service or leadership.

Juliette Low Birthplace Circle of Friends

The troop has received a letter from the birthplace saying the need our help. Remember those stairs going up to the room where we had our “corset” session, well then it is no surprise that the place is being restored. In 1953 Girl Scouts across the country banded together in the “Dimes for Daisy” campaign to save and restore the house. Well 40 years later restoration is needed again and the campaign is now “Dollars for Daisy” (not surprising given inflation). Since we have some money in the General Troop fund I will write a check for $10.00 as a gift from our troop. Individuals can join for as little as $50.00 and Mrs. Davis has an application if anyone is interested (please let her know by .
