  ____Classika Theater in Arlington Virginia would help us earn The Play’s the thing IP. There current production, shich runs through October 14, is Someone Else’s Wife by Fyodor Dostowvsky (author of Crime and Punishment. Thouhg it sounds like a nice comedy I think timing may not work in our favor. However, the theater contact syas she will see how she can help us at a futrure date.

 

____  _____Gadsby’s Tavern in Alexandria has an ocvernight the Juniors, Cadettes and Seniors. “Spend the night in historic Gadsby’s Tavern and experience life as an 18th cnetury traveler. Hands-on activities, dancing and a spooky tour. Program includes evening snack and continental breakfast. Activities meet some IP requirements for Heritage Hunt.” If selected as a choice we would put in for a winter date. Cost is $30.00 per girl.

 

____  _____American Labor Interest patch (special patch available through this program only; not in IP book) “This Interest Project Program has been designed by the Couting labor Task Force of the Metropolitan Washington Council AFL-CIO. Learn about labor history and labor issues. Girls will particiapate in hands-on demonstartions of union workers jobs and solve a present day work place problem through union strategy and role-play. Most of all the IP requirements are covered in the one-day session. Lunch will be provided.” Cost is $5.00 per girl and date is March 17, 2001.

 

____  _____My Sister’s Place, a shelter for battered women and their children, is excited to offer Senior Scouts the opportunity to explore realtionship abuse in our society.  The following are the work shops available and you can mark ones you would be interested in attending. Parents would have to give Sensitive issue permission in order for a girl to attend. Alternate dates for these progrmas are available.

         

          ____ Real Love Doesn’t Hurt – Workshop I is a 2 hour interactivite participatory workshop, in which particiapants will discuss the following issues: domestic violence, teen dating violence, why teens are vulnerable to teen dating violence, dynamics of an abusive relationship, warning signs of an abusive realtionship, why people stay in an abusive realtionship, why people abuse, how to help a friend in an abusive realtionship and resources available in the DC area. (Nov 11 from 1 – 3 pm; cost $5 per girl)

 

          ____ Workshop II is 3 hours and includes an additional Clothesline Project component. The Clothesline Project is a display of shirts created by survivors of gender related violence. The project is frequently displayed in various locations in the DC area in order to raise abuse awareness. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to speak out against violence against women and girls by creating a shirt for the Clothesline Project. Participants may create a shirt as a way to condemn violence in our society.  (Oct 28 from 1 – 4 pm; cost $7 per girl)

 

          ____ Relationship Violence and Animal Cruelty is an exciting new program which draws connections between animal abuse and violence against woment and girls. The 2 hour program illustrates how animal abuse may be indicative of an abusive partner and raises awareness and intervention for these types of abuse. This workshop is co-facilitated with a representative form the Washington Humane Society. (Dec 2 from 1 – 3 pm; cost $5 per girl)

 

____ _____Adopt a Refuge help secure a safe haven for plants and animals for the next century and beyond. Adopt a Refuge! You will learn how to assess an area of the refuge for it natural resources and help monitor it development. Refuges play an essential role in sustaining and enhancing migratory bird populations and providing vital habitat for hundreds of threatened and endangered wildlife. The Occoquan Bay national Wildlife Refuge is part of a system of over 500 Wildlife Refuges operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. GSCNC is working with the Fairfax Audubon Society (FAS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to provide a program called Audubon Refuge Keepers (ARK) Program. This chapter of the Audubon Society will help Girl Scouts (Cadettes and Seniors) learn to monitor wildlife and their habitat, count birds, and provide nesting boxes and help set up new trails and interpretive programs for the public. Girl Scouts are invited to come and join the adventure of learning how to set up a new refuge. Dates are negotiable with GSCNC. Cost is free.
