General Gear and Packing list

 CAMPING GEAR

 

 First Aid Kit

·        disinfectant

·        tape

·        gauze/bandana

·        ice packs

·        burn cream

·        poison ivy/insect bite cream

·        sanitary supplies and disposal material

·        moleskin (if hiking)

 

Latrine kit:

·        bowl or bucket (small)

·        disinfectant

·        rubber gloves

·        brush

 

Wash kit

·        small bar soap in stocking

·        plastic jug with handle (NOT from milk) and (small) hole in cap

·        cord

 

Dishwashing kit

·        three basins

·        liquid soap

·        bleach

·        waste filter (knee high or stocking)

  Lantern(s)

Camp stove(s) and fuel

  Camp Packing List

  Sleeping kit

·        Sleeping bag in duffle bag (put heavy-duty plastic bag inside duffle for extra waterproofing)

·        Mat/tarp/plastic bag (for cushioning/insulation)

·        Small pillow (optional)

 

Clothing:  LAYER!!!

·        Sturdy shoes/boots, NO open toes!

·        Change of clothes (everything) for sleeping:  NO nightgowns

·        extra pair of socks

·        Long pants/long sleeves add warmth and keep off ticks in the woods

·        hat/cap for protection and warmth

·        Jacket/sweatshirt for cooler evenings

·        Poncho and rainhat (This is a rain or shine event!)

  LADIES:  THIS IS NOT A FASHION WEEKEND.  PACK SMALL AND LIGHT IN A DUFFLE OR BACKPACK.  CLOTHES SHOULD BE MULTIPURPOSE. 

  Toiletries

NOTHING SCENTED OR IN AEROSOL CONTAINERS

  Mess kit-drip bag including;

·        cup with handle

·        small bowl and plate

·        cutlery

  FLASHLIGHT with extra batteries

Water bottle/canteen: with something to attach it to yourself

Plastic bags for dirty/wet clothes

Bandana (doubles as towel, sling, hat, tie-on for cup)

  Personal medicine:  Give to adult first aider in original bottles with dosage requirements, in ziplock bag labeled with name.  Permission slip for administering medicine MUST be signed by parent.

 

Reston Service Opportunities

 

October 7- Folkswalk- Walker Nature Education Center is looking for 2 volunteers to host a stop at the Nature Center for people on the Folkswalk to stop, do a small craft, and find out more information.  9am to noon.

  October 20 Float-In Movies-  RA needs assistance making free popcorn and drinks.  2 volunteers needed at Ridge Heights Pool from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

October 21- Community Workday- Come dig in at the Walker Nature Education Center for a few hours of service to nature.

October 26- Board of Directors Meeting- Reston Association, in conjunction with Comcast Communication, is looking for volunteers to videotape our board meetings.  Two volunteers needed from 6:45 until approximately 10:30.  

October 25-27- Halloween Trail- Help the Nature Center come alive at night by providing another exciting night walk for our kids. We've added another night due to popular demand.  We need at least 70 volunteers to make this happen!
