Joseph's pregnancy/preterm labor story
I found out I was pregnant with Joseph in January, 2002. The months slowly passed as I awaited the arrival of my no name baby boy. Here you will read the story of the amazing birth of my son and the first day of the rest of my life with Joseph...
On August 8, 2002 @ 32 weeks: When I picked mom up (my car had recently died and I was waiting to get a new one, therefore I was borrowing mom's.) I mentioned to her that I was not feeling real good. My stomach had been upset and I had been sick to my stomach. Well I decided to go with her to the college, so she could sign up for some fall classes. When we got there, there happened to be a load of steps I had to walk and I did it without much problem. While mom was talking to someone about her schedule, my stomach got completely tight and I thought I was going to throw up. Once mom came out, she ask me what was wrong and I told her and she said she'd drop me off, so I could laydown...Well I ask her if we could go to my grandma's house for a few to see how she was and when I got there I sit down on the couch and said I think I should call my OB/GYN.
He called back right away and instructed me to go to L&D to be checked...So off we went to the hospital, where I was sent straight up to L&D to be placed on the fetal monitor to see how the baby's heart rate was. The nurse handed me a button and told me when I had a contraction to push the button so they could tell what was going on. About 5 minutes later she came back in and I said "I haven't pushed the button yet!" and she said too bad, you don't need to. You are in labor! I was having contractions about 10 minutes apart and had no earthly idea how long it had been happening. So I was started on an I.V. drip of Mag. 400 to get my contractions stopped and I had 2 steroid shots to help develop the baby's lungs. This had me enter my long 2 nights in the hospital.
I got out of the hospital on August 10, 2002 with strict instructions to take my Mag. 400 pill every 6 hours on the dot. Talk about a pain, having to wake up at 3 a.m. to take a pill! But it was every bit worth it to have my little one! I seen my OB/GYN weekly and he said I'd be on the Mag. 400 until I was 37 weeks. Well he ended up keeping me on the Mag. 400 an extra week, because I was really small and barely showing and he was afraid the baby was going to be too small. Once I came off the Mag. 400 at 38 weeks, he said "It'd be any day now."
Well I waited! And I waited...And I waited...And every week I wobbled into my weekly check exam's where I was told nothing had change and he'd see me next week. At my 39 week appointment I told him I couldn't go on anymore. I was hot, I was swollen, the baby was pushing on my hips (I have had 5 knee surgeries and my hips/down are messed up quite a bit now) and that I just couldn't do it anymore. During my exam he pushed on my tailbone and I came off the examination table. He then explained that if I did have the baby vaginally, it could very much shatter my tailbone. I oppted that day to have a C-section. My C-section was scheduled for Tuesday, September 17, 2002...Just 8 short days from the baby's real due date! (according to Ultrasound!)
