Exercise Helps Lower Back Pain
Nutritional Approach to Reduce Inflammation and Pain

This e-newsletter will cover various subjects including exercise, nutrition and practice news. Enjoy!

REHAB EXERCISE NEWS

A new study released at an international spine meeting can be summarized as stating that when it comes to CHRONIC lower back pain, exercise programs of either isotonic weight training or aerobics appear more effective over long term individualized therapy programs.
The study is a particular boost for aerobic training as well as weight training in that all 3 groups maintained similar improvements in pain intensity and frequency at 12-month follow-up, but only the two exercise groups maintained long-term gains in self-reported disability. The gains did not result in changes in muscle size but did result in significant changes in muscle strength and endurance and were attributed to neural mechanisms such as increased coordination, neural drive and reduced fear of pain.

WIIFM (What’s In It For Me!):

What this means to you is that your chiropractic center has been way ahead of the curve and that programs that restore strength, muscle balance and endurance along with getting aerobic (all of this done in MODERATE intensity levels only!) is the best thing that you can do for your overall spinal health. There are such significant collateral health benefits to getting aerobic and strong that I truly believe that you cannot be optimally healthy without moderate intensity weight training and aerobics. This combination of health building activities has literally hundreds of benefits such as decreasing the following short list: fatigue, cholesterol, blood sugar problems, diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis pain, headache pain, back and neck pain, aging, menopausal symptoms, immune dysfunctions and more.

How to get started:

Talk with either of your chiropractors and meet with Terry to get your individualized program started. Another thing we find essential to proper moderate aerobic training is the heart rate monitor. We have the new monitors in stock and I never exercise without it. Too many people are UNDER or OVER exercising when it comes to aerobics, leading to a lot of problems including injury or failure to lose body fat.

NUTRITION NEWS:

Many people have asked me to hi-light certain products we have in our natural pharmacy. This newsletter I will concentrate on two products that are an effective alternative to aspirin, Celebrex, Vioxx, Motrin, Advil, Tylenol, Alleve and other medications for the relief of joint pain.
INFLAVINOID INTENSIVE CARE:

This natural herbal preparation features a blend of select Ayurvedic herbs such as boswellia, turmeric, and ginger that may support normal healthy fatty acid metabolism and the biochemical balance of prostaglandin’s associated with healthy tissues. It also features a blend of variety of nutrients with anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, including citrus bioflavinoid complex, cayenne pepper, quercitin, and vitamin C, which may reduce the generation of, and damage caused by, free radicals. In my personal experience, this preparation has been very helpful in the fighting of pain and inflammation of acute and chronic back and joint pains.

EPA-DHA

is a concentrated blend of the omega-3 essential fatty acids that we find deficient in most people’s diets. These fats have strong anti-inflammatory properties and have been reported in the literature to reduce the pain and swelling of arthritis.

These products work in similar ways as medications to reduce inflammation and pain but they are much safer and do not lead to the destruction of the stomach, liver, kidneys and the joints in the way that many medications do. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like the ones listed above) are responsible for at least 16,000 deaths per year plus millions of dollars in health care costs to those injured by them. These nutritional products should be in your home natural pharmacy and are great alternatives to anti-inflammatory medications. The EPA-DHA will take one to three weeks to work and the Inflavinoid IC will take about an hour or so. A more comprehensive approach includes the UltraInflamX medical food program, which is having incredibly good results for all types of painful conditions, related to inflammation. We will go over this in another newsletter.

There are 4 basic types of fitness:
  1. physical,
  2. biochemical,
  3. mental/emotional
  4. and spiritual.
